The invention relates to cleaning compositions in the form of microemulsions for cleansing the skin or for the manual cleaning of hard surfaces. These cleaning compositions consist of oil, water, surfactant and cosolvent. As surfactant, use is made of a surfactant system consisting of 80-100% alkylpolyglycoside and 0-20% auxiliary surfactant, of anionic, nonionic or betaine type, whose choice is largely arbitrary. The cosolvent is an oligoester of polybasic carboxylic or hydroxycarboxylic acids with C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alcohols. The microemulsions are highly stable and can be diluted in water without problems.

Low-foaming, liquid or pulverulent machine detergents today consist, in the surfactant portion, mainly of surfactants based on petrochemicals; the biodegradability and ecotoxicity frequently does not reach the level of surfactants based on natural materials. Accordingly, a surfactant combination for low-foaming machine detergents is proposed, which is predominantly prepared from renewable raw materials; washing results and biodegradability are excellent. The surfactant portion of these machine detergents consists of fatty alcohol ethoxylates, soaps and alkyl polyglycosides which consist at least of a mixture of alkylglycosides of varying chain length and varying degrees of glycosylation.

Oil is recovered from a subsurface reservoir by surfactants. Surfactant flooding is accomplished especially in reservoirs with marked temperature fluctuations or a temperature gradient which are normally problematic since a soluble surfactant effective for oil mobilization does not retain these properties over wide temperature ranges of, e.g., 10.degree. to 100.degree. C. The new process provides a good surfactant effectiveness even at such extreme temporary and/or local temperature fluctuations. A mixture of a carboxymethylated oxethylate and a polyglucosyl sorbitol fatty acid ester is used. The polyglucosyl sorbitols used as fatty acid esters are those with 2 to 20 glucose units. Recovery of oil by such surfactant flooding is useful above all in reservoirs with temporary or local temperature changes.
