A system for scanning a frequency spectrum to detect usage thereof includes an ultra-wideband receiver for performing the scanning, and cooperates with a spectrum usage estimator module and a radio controller unit. The spectrum usage estimator module derives from the scanning performed via the ultra-wideband receiver information as to usage of individual bands in the frequency spectrum. The radio controller unit controls operation of a radio cognitive system as a function of the information as to usage of individual bands in the frequency spectrum as derived by the spectrum usage estimator module. The radio cognitive system operates over unused bands in the frequency spectrum.

An arrangement for connecting mobile client devices to the Internet, or other IP based networks, uses WPAN and WLAN infrastructures or certain cellular systems like GPRS. This is achieved substantially seamlessly by providing a routing mechanism (IP-IP Tunnel) that allows mobile client devices to connect to an application server using communications standards depending on the available infrastructure, e.g. GPRS, IEEESO802.llb or Bluetooth wireless standards. An arrangement is disclosed for performing a handoff of a slave unit (MT) from a currently wireless connected first master unit (AP) of a shared resource network to a further master unit (AP) of the shared resource network, the arrangement including: a) holding in the first master unit information about the topology of the shared resource network; and b) activating during a handoff a paging procedure in one or more further master units (AP) based on the topology, in the paging procedure the or each further master unit pages the slave unit.

A network interface driver is provided for the communication of TCP packets involving a mobile terminal and a wireless link. Acknowledgement signals are sent responsive to TCP data packets. A control element is arranged to prevent acknowledgement signals that are delayed in the wireless link from triggering a time-out signal in the TCP packet source.
