Navigational lane guidance enhances a maneuver display by incorporating full display of available lanes in a freeway, when available in the map data. An otherwise regular turn icon display is replaced with a variable width image that grows to show all available lanes, highlighting lanes usable to complete a navigated maneuver. A new lane TrueType font displays the lane guidance image, with individual characters representing each possible line situation. Since TrueType fonts are vector-based, they can be used to generate the lane images at any size, in a platform-independent fashion. The lane font has direction arrows, which can be combined to form composite arrows; and additional direction arrows as needed to allow replacement of the routing icons currently in use. Lane dividers may also be implemented.

Navigational lane guidance

Natural navigational guidance provides enhanced guidance instructions that take advantage of unique geographic features along a navigated route to specify maneuver points. Guidance points are clearly visible, unambiguous, and locally unique features in the geography of the maneuver area that can be used to aid the user in discovering the place where the maneuver point is. Within a guidance point selection area, a specific guidance point type has a more strict area within which it can be used. A natural guidance point selection area for an upcoming maneuver to be navigated is determined, and a unique geographic feature within the determined natural guidance point selection area is selected as a natural guidance point for navigation of the upcoming maneuver. A turn-type natural guidance point for an upcoming maneuver to be navigated is generated when the user device is within the natural guidance point selection area.

Embodiments of the present invention provide for synchronizing contact and calendar information between a handset and a computer. For example, one method as disclosed herein allows the handset to import contact and calendar information from the computing device or to export the contact and the calendar information to the computing device. The computing device can be a PC or a new handset, for example. The importation and the exportation of the contact and calendar information includes a conversion process that occurs within the handset that transforms the contact and calendar information into a format suitable for the destination of the data.

Method and apparatus for synchronizing contact and calendar information between a handset and a computing device

Disclosed is a system and method for maintaining software instructions stored in a wireless communications device memory. The software is organized using code sections, where each code section is in a contiguous portion of memory and relocatable independently of other code sections. Maintenance includes the ability to run a unique software component called a compactor while the normal system is not in executable form. The compactor expands, compresses, and relocates code sections to allow downloaded code to be incorporated into the system code base.

Maintenance of over the air upgradeable wireless communication device software

A communication system is provided that enables automated retrieval of caller ID picture information and association with contact information, while still allowing security control over information or images that are sent to the requesting device. The communication system has a wireless device communicating with a picture server. The wireless device receives an incoming call with caller ID information, and determines if a picture is locally stored for the caller. If no picture is locally stored for the caller, then a request is made to retrieve a picture from the picture server. If the picture server has the requested picture, and the wireless device is authorized to receive the picture, then the picture is downloaded to the wireless device, where the picture is associated with contact information for the caller. The picture of the caller will then be automatically displayed when the caller places future calls.

Picture caller ID systems, methods and apparatus

A wireless handset, system and method is described that enables a wireless handset having access to an international long distance service to provide another wireless handset with temporary or limited international long distance service. The wireless handset comprises a transceiver, a user interface, a service request, and a first service acknowledgement. The transceiver communicates with a wireless network managed by a wireless network service provider that controls the first service. The wireless network communicates with the wireless handset and a separate wireless handset that does not have access to the first service. The user interface enables the separate wireless handset to have temporary access to the first service. The service request communicated from the wireless handset requests the separate wireless handset have temporary access to the first service. The first service acknowledgement acknowledges the separate wireless handset has temporary access to the first service.

System and method for temporarily accessing another user's service

A wireless handset configured to be remotely accessed is described. The wireless handset comprises a user interface, a handset memory, a processor, and a software module. The user interface resident on the wireless handset is configured to enable the wireless handset to be remotely controlled with a remote lock password. The handset memory stores the remote lock password. The processor is adapted to receive a remote lock message from another electronic device. The remote lock message comprises a received password and a target phone number. The software module matches the received password with the remote lock password and then proceeds to send at least one call to the target phone number. Additionally, a method for controlling usage of the wireless handset is also described.

Remotely controlling access to a wireless handset

One way to deliver increased wireless communication device performance without using a higher performance processor is to offload processor functions in a wireless communications device. In one example a wireless device selects a processor function to be performed for the wireless device and evaluates the selected processor function to determine whether to offload the processor function. If it is determined that the processor function can be offloaded the wireless device transmits a wireless request to a remote processor to perform the offload processor function. After performing the processor function at the remote processor and generating a result the wireless device receives the result.

System and method for increased wireless communication device performance

A system and method configured to support inserting at least one object in a text editor comprises a text editor module, a text rasterizer module, at least one object to be inserted, and a separate object interpreter module. The text editor module is unable to insert an object directly and is configured to support UNICODE and scalable fonts. The text editor module comprises a first set of UNICODE numerical values and a second set of UNICODE numerical values. The text rasterizer module is associated with the text editor module and is configured to use at least one of the first set of numerical values to generate text to display in a display area. The user selected object to be inserted is associated with the second set of numerical values usable by the text editor. The separate object interpreter module is configured to receive the second set of numerical values and insert the object into the display area.

Inserting objects using a text editor that supports scalable fonts

A system and a method are provided for optimal Short Message System (SMS) encoding in a wireless communications device having SMS capabilities. The system includes an optimizing subsystem and an encoding subsystem. The optimizing subsystem accepts an SMS message, identification of available encoding formats, and information regarding wireless device resource encoding requirements, such as memory usage, for the available encoding formats. The optimizing subsystem evaluates the characters in the SMS message to identify which of the available encoding formats are usable for encoding the characters, determines a memory usage requirement, and selects, as the optimal encoding format, the usable encoding format having the lowest memory usage. The optimizing subsystem supplies an optimizing signal identifying the optimal encoding format. The encoding subsystem accepts the SMS message and the optimizing signal, and encodes the message in the optimal encoding format. The encoding subsystem supplies the encoded SMS message to a wireless device memory circuit. The memory circuit supplies the stored SMS message for presentation on a user display or transmission by a transceiver.
