In a process for the production of a silicone in water emulsion in which a polysiloxane fluid, at least one surfactant and water are continuously fed to a high shear mixer in such proportions as to form a viscous oil in water emulsion which is continuously withdrawn from the mixer. The polysiloxane fluid may be a non-reactive fluid or may have reactive groups capable of taking part in a chain extension reaction. A desired emulsion particle size can be maintained by monitoring the pressure in the supply line at the inlet to the high shear mixer.

Process for making silicone emulsions

Hot melt coating composition, particularly suitable for low viscosity requiring application techniques, the composition having a Tg below 5&deg; C., preferably below &minus;20&deg; C., and a viscosity below 2,000 mPa.s, preferably below 600 mPa.s, measured at 70&deg; C. at a shear rate of 10 s . The composition includes at least one amorphous binder having a Tg below 5&deg; C., preferably below &minus;20&deg; C., and/or at least one crystalline or semi-crystalline binder having a melting point or melting range below 150&deg; C. The composition can be a one component system comprising an epoxy-functional resin, a polyamine having cyanamide groups, preferably dicyandiamide, and a blocked catalyst which is unblocked at an elevated temperature below the curing temperature. Alternatively, the composition may be one component of a two-component system based on isocyanate/polyol crosslinking.

Hot melt paint composition

Emulsions containing liquid polymers are made by first condensing monomers in a polymerization reactor having an inlet, a reaction chamber, and an outlet. The monomers are mixed with a condensation catalyst, and a pressurized gas forms a foaming mixture. The foaming mixture is fed down the chamber to the outlet while the monomers polymerize in the chamber. Water and a surfactant are then fed to the lower end of the chamber to form a water-in-oil emulsion with the aid of the foaming action in the chamber. A shear device then inverts the water-in-oil emulsion to an oil-in-water emulsion.
