An optical system comprises a Bragg reflector configured to diffract incident light having a wavelength between about 0.1 nm and about 0.7 nm. The optical system also comprises a diffraction grating comprising parallel lines engraved on a surface of the Bragg reflector. Specifically, the diffraction grating is configured to diffract incident light having a wavelength between about 0.6 nm and about 150 nm.

A multiplexer-demultiplexer for different wavelengths carried by optical fibers (10) the ends of which are disposed in the immediate vicinity of the focus of a concave mirror (18) associated with a plane diffraction grating (15) is disclosed. The multiplexer-demultiplexer consists of four elements that are adhesively attached to one another, namely, a fiber-carrying element (1); a grating-carrying element (15); an intermediary element (3) of the same index as the element (2); and a mirror element (4) having an index of refraction different from that of element (3) and selected to compensate for longitudinal spherical aberration of the mirror (18) for at least one of the wavelengths being utilized.

Wavelength-selective multiplexer-demultiplexer

A monochromator having a fixed inlet slot, a holographic grating carried on a concave turnable support, and a fixed outlet slot, the support surface of the holographic grating being a concave portion of a toroidal surface, taken at the outer periphery of the toroid, and symmetrically disposed with respect to the equatorial plane of the toroid, the equatorial plane also containing the point sources for recording the holographic grating.
