Described is a system and method for receiving an electronic mail including an attachment file and separating the attachment file from the electronic mail. The attachment is then sent to a remote source and the attachment file is replaced with a substitute file including identifying data for retrieving the attachment file from the remote source. The electronic mail with the substitute file is then forwarded to a receiver.

Method for transmitting high-priority packets in an IP transmission network based upon the Internet Protocol (IP) wherein low-priority packets or fragments of packets are transmitted between a sender and a receiver and at least a high-priority packet can be transmitted from the sender to the receiver by pre-emption of a low-priority packet or a fragment of packet. the method comprises in the sender, the steps of determining whether a low-priority packet or fragment of packet is being transmitted from the sender to the receiver when a high-priority packet has to be transmitted, setting to 1 a reserved bit within the IP header of the high-priority packet used as a pre-emption indicator if a low-priority packet or fragment of packet is currently transmitted, transmitting the high-priority packet with the pre-emption indicator set to 1 from the sender to the receiver, and resuming the transmission of the low-priority packet or fragment of packet at the end of transmission of the high-priority packet.

Today, a Client and an associated Server use a single IP priority for all the data packets exchanged over a TCP session used to transport the Telnet traffic (file transfer and screen related interactions). The present invention discloses a method and system to provide the Client with the capability, when exchanging a file with an SNA Host over a TCP session, to dynamically change (i.e downgrade) the IP priority associated to all data packets flowing to the TN3270 Server over the TCP session, during the whole duration of the file transfer. The associated Server, on receipt of a data packet from the client (due to screen related interactions or to file transfers), memorizes the associated priority and uses this priority over all packets that it sends back to the client. This allows IP network implementation to give higher priority treatment to the data packets due to screen related interactions (interactive traffic) over data packets related to file transfer (batch traffic). The priority used by data packets related to file transfer is customisable, to give maximum freedom to the network designer. For example, SNA true interactive traffic (due to screen related interactions) could flow on the highest priority, pure IP traffic could flow on any of the possible medium priorities and data packet due to file transfer could use the lowest priority within the network.

A method and system for implementing of Data Link Switching-like protocols within a high speed packet switching network environment. The invention relates to new access services for NBBS (Networking Broad Band Services) networks. A new access agent (implementing the DLSw Access Services) provides a dramatically simplified but comprehensive Data Link Switching Services across a wide area network and minimizes the latency to set up SNA paths across the network, while maximizing the efficiency of setting up these paths. The invention does not require the implementation of a complex and large TCP/IP protocol stack within the Data Link Switching node. The Access Agent implementing the DLSw node makes intensive use of such NBBS facilities as the Spanning Tree with the use of internode functional addresses, for the exchange of the control information necessary to efficiently set up paths across the network between DLSw access agents.

A method and system for establishing a Systems Network Architecture (SNA) session between SNA resources through a packet/cell switching network. The packet/cell switching network includes an origin access node that provides client access services, and at least one destination access node that provides server access services. In accordance with the method of the present invention a SNA session request is received from a source SNA resource for establishing an SNA session with a target SNA resource. An undirected message is broadcast over the packet/cell switching network to identify the destination access nodes that support the source SNA resource and that provide server access services. One or more positive replies are received from respectively one or more of the destination access nodes that support the source SNA resource and that provide server access services. As part of the receiving step, information relating to a traffic handling capacity of the destination access node and information related to establishment of a connection between the origin access node and the destination access node is retrieved. Finally, a destination access node is selected in accordance with the information describing the destination node and in accordance with the information related to establishment of a connection between the origin access node and the destination node.
