The invention provides a closures () for a compartment () having one or more walls () and an opening () defined by at least one of the walls (). The closure () is associated with at least one fastener located inside the compartment (). The fastener can hold the closure () in a first position (eg. closed) relative to the opening (). The fastener is adapted to cause the closure () to assume a second position (eg. open) relative to the opening () upon receipt of a suitable signal. The closure () has at least one indicium () visible from outside the compartment (). The indicium () is adapted to provide a visual indication of a status of the closure () or the compartment (), such as closure open, closure closed, compartment empty, compartment occupied. Instead of indicium () or in addition to it, the closure of the invention can include in the fastener means for communicating to a remote device, a status of the closure or the compartment. The closure and the compartment may form an array with other closures and compartments having similar fasteners. In that event, the fastener in each compartment may be addressable.

Closure for a compartment

This invention relates to a fastener system, in particular a system for improving computer room security that reduces energy consumption. The fastener system comprises a fastener for fastening a first element to a second element and a sensor of any suitable form and means for activating a third element in response to a signal generated from said sensor. The sensor sends a signal that prompts the third element to act in response to the status received from the fastener. This invention is particularly useful within server racks.

Computer room security

The invention deals with methods for assembly and disassembly, especially suitable for assembly and disassembly by a computer. In relation to assembly, a component () is positioned in assembly () in accordance with a proposed position. The composent () is confirmed as being in its correct spatial position in the assembly () by sensing means () or () capable of sensing spatial relationship and/or connection of the component () in relation to the assembly (). Information regarding the sensed spatial relationship and/or connection is communicated to information processing means. A method for disassembly is also disclosed. The assembly and disassembly methods may require steps to be taken in a chosen sequence. The component () itself is also described, as is an improved assembly system which includes the component () together with information processing means.

Assembly and disassembly method, system, and component

Access to one or more storage areas is controlled. An indication that a packaged asset is available for delivery to an intended recipient, an indication of a size of the asset, and an identity of the intended recipient are received. An available storage space is determined based at least in part upon the size of the asset and the identity of the intended recipient. When a storage space is determined to be available for the packaged asset, an access code is transmitted to the intended recipient allowing the intended recipient to access the available storage space using the access code.

The lockers () are movable into the channel (). The fastener () also has a locking tongue (), having a plurality of spaced blockers (). The tongue () is movable within the channel () between a locked position in which the blockers () prevent movement of the lockers () into the channel () and an unlocked position in which the lockers () are not prevented from moving into the channel ().

Strip fastener

The invention relates to a tool which has more than one function. As a first function, the tool is capable of activating a fastening element, either by direct physical contact or by remote activation. As a second function, the tool is capable of detecting an attribute of the fastening element. The attribute can include position or location of the fastening element, status of the fastening element, identity of the fastening element, environmental factors affecting the fastening element, size of the fastening element, sequence in which the fastening element must be activated, history of the fastening element, authorization requirements in relation to the fastening element, or activation requirements of the fastening element.

Multi-function tool

The invention provides a fastener () which has an actuating means (), a bias means () and a flexible core (). The flexible core () has an means for engaging () which may be integral with but is preferable separate from the flexible core () The actuating means () includes a material adapted to contract when activated, such as shape memory alloy. Upon contraction of this material, the means for engaging () is movable between an engagement position and a disengagement position. The bias means () biases the flexible core () to the engagement position.

The invention relates to a stabilising device () for an assembly which includes two shape memory alloy wires () adapted to operate in conjunction. The stabilising device () includes a rocker plate () for attachment to each of the shape memory alloy wires; the rocker plate () is adapted to pivot when one shape memory alloy wire (or) is subjected to a stress greater than that to which the other shape memory alloy wire (or) is subjected, in order to reduce the stress on the first-mentioned shape memory alloy wire. The invention further relates to a fastener () including a stud () having a locking cavity (), an aperture () adapted to receive the stud (), a locking means (teeth) () adapted to engage the locking cavity (), a shuttle () rotatable by a rotating means including material adapted to contract when activated and a plug () slidable within the shuttle () to close off the aperture () when not occupied by the stud (). The shuttle () is rotatable by the rotating means between a locking position, in which the locking means (teeth) () engages the locking cavity (), and an unlocking position in which the locking means (teeth) () does not engage the locking cavity (). The plug () can help to prevent contamination of the fastener ().

Stud fastener and stabilising device

The invention provides a fastener () for releasably securing a first element, such as an air bag () to a second element such as a bracket () located in a vehicle. Fastener () has a locking pin () which is movable between a locked position and a release position. Locking pin () has an engageable head (). Fastener () includes clip () for engaging head (). Locking pin () is biased to the release position, for example, by spring (). Fastener () includes an actuator such as spring (), comprising or including shape memory alloy and adapted to elongate upon application of appropriate energy. When spring () is elongated, it causes locking pin () to move to the release position. The invention also provides a fastener assembly () including at least one post () having a groove (). Fastener assembly () includes a bar or latch, for example, in the form of wire () adapted to engage the groove (). Attached to bar () is connecting means, such as shape memory spring (). Upon application of suitable energy, spring () is adapted to change shape and draw bar () out of engagement with groove ().

Fastener for air bags and other uses

The invention relates to a product, which may take a wide variety of forms but which is exemplified by a pipe or a panel. The product has a first function, such as that normally expected of a pipe or a panel, and a second function different from the first. The second function is chosen from a group consisting of: delivery of energy, for a first purpose, delivery of energy for a second purpose, delivery of data for a first purpose, delivery of data for a second purpose, switching. The product has incorporated in its means capable of enabling the product to be used as medium to perform the second function. The invention also concerns a method of manufacturing the products.

The invention discloses several types of fastener, fastening systems, fastener assemblies and related areas. In particular, the invention discloses a releasable fastening system () which has a pin () with a locking cavity (). The pin is intended for insertion in an aperture (). A locking means () engages the locking cavity () of the pin () when the pin () is received in the aperture (). The system () also includes unlocking means () which includes material adapted to contract when activated. When a material contracts, engagement means () included in the locking means (), disengage the locking cavity ().

Fasteners and other assemblies

In the first aspect, the invention provides a fastener which includes a fastening element and an actuating means attached to the fastening element. The fastening element has a flexible beam and an engagement means. The actuating means includes a material, such as shape memory alloy, which contracts when activated. When the material is contracted, the beam moves between an engagement position and a disengagement position. In a second aspect, the invention provides a fastener for use in a network of fasteners. The fastener has address means which serve to distinguish the fastener from the other fasteners in the network. The fastener may be the same as the fastener in the first aspect of the invention, or a different fastener. A network or system of such fasteners is also provided. In a third aspect, the invention provides, in a process for producing product, during which process there are a number of steps in which a first element is releasably fixed to a second element, the use of the fastener in the first aspect or the second aspect of the invention to releasably fix the first element and the second element. The invention also provides a computer system programmed to perform the process of the invention.
