An all solid hybrid waveguiding structure provides large mode area, acceptable losses of the desired core mode and very high losses of the undesired next higher order mode in the core. Embodiments of the waveguide include a hybrid of low index barriers providing confinement by total internal reflection, and further include high index rings that support guided modes only at effective indices different from that of the desired core mode.

All solid hybrid arrow fiber

An all fiber wavelength selective coupler provides wavelength selective transfer of optical energy between two or more separated waveguides. The coupler includes signal cores that are separated enough that they can be fusion spliced to standard fibers as lead-in and lead-out pigtails. A bridge between the signal cores facilitates transfer of the optical energy through a process of evanescent coupling. In one example, the bridge is formed of a series of graded index cores.

Wavelength selective transfer of optical energy

A class of fibers is described that have a non-circular cross section on one or both ends that can by optimized to capture the optical radiation from a laser diode or diode array and deliver the light in the same or different shape on the opposite end of the fiber. A large multimode rectangular waveguide may be provided which can accept the radiation from a high-power diode bar and transform it into a circular cross section on the opposite end, while preserving brightness.

Non-circular optical fiber and mode shape converter and method

A substrate having an upper surface and a lower surface is provided. The substrate includes a plurality of v-grooves formed in the upper surface. Each v-groove includes a first side and a second side perpendicular to the first side. A laser diode bar assembly is disposed within each of the v-grooves and attached to the first side. The laser diode bar assembly includes a first adhesion layer disposed on the first side of the v-groove, a metal plate attached to the first adhesion layer, a second adhesion layer disposed over the metal plate, and a laser diode bar attached to the second adhesion layer. The laser diode bar has a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) substantially similar to that of the metal plate.

A method of manufacturing a plurality of diffractive optical elements includes providing a partially transmissive slide, providing a first piece of PTR glass, and directing first UV radiation through the partially transmissive slide to impinge on the first piece of PTR glass. The method also includes exposing predetermined portions of the first piece of PTR glass to the first UV radiation and thermally treating the exposed first piece of PTR glass. The method further includes providing a second piece of PTR glass and directing second UV radiation through the thermally treated first piece of PTR glass to impinge on the second piece of PTR glass. The method additionally includes exposing predetermined portions of the second piece of PTR glass to the second UV radiation, thermally treating the exposed second piece of PTR glass, and repeating providing and processing of the second piece of PTR glass using additional pieces of PTR glass.

Diffractive laser beam homogenizer including a photo-active material and method of fabricating the same

Badal Optometer and rotating cylinders are inserted in the AO-OCT to correct large spectacle aberrations such as myopia, hyperopic and astigmatism for ease of clinical use and reduction. Spherical mirrors in the sets of the telescope are rotated orthogonally to reduce aberrations and beam displacement caused by the scanners. This produces greatly reduced AO registration errors and improved AO performance to enable high order aberration correction in a patient eyes.

Compact adaptive optic-optical coherence tomography system

An adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopes is introduced to produce non-invasive views of the human retina. The use of dual deformable mirrors improved the dynamic range for correction of the wavefront aberrations compared with the use of the MEMS mirror alone, and improved the quality of the wavefront correction compared with the use of the bimorph mirror alone. The large-stroke bimorph deformable mirror improved the capability for axial sectioning with the confocal imaging system by providing an easier way to move the focus axially through different layers of the retina.

High-resolution adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscope with multiple deformable mirrors

A bi-directional optoelectric transceiver module comprising a bi-directional element with a plate positioned on a side of the bi-directional element wherein the plate is coated with a reflection enhancing coating which reflects light at a first wavelength emitted by a light emitting device and which transmits light emitted by an optical fiber at a second wavelength wherein a light detecting device is positioned to detect at least one of the first and second wavelengths of light.

Bi-directional optical/electrical transceiver module

Optical alignment apparatus includes a first element mounting a first lens and a light source and a second element mounting a second lens and a light receiving structure. The first lens is placed a first distance from the light source and is constructed to collimate light received from the light source. The first and second elements are mounted relative to each other to position the second lens a third distance from the first lens and to receive the collimated light from the first lens. The second lens is positioned a second distance from the light receiving structure to focus the collimated light on the light receiving structure. The first and second lens are constructed so that the first and second distances are dependent upon each other and the third distance is independent of the first and second distances.

Optoelectric alignment apparatus

The optoelectric alignment apparatus and lens system includes a glass ball positioned to receive light from a light source along an optical axis. A second lens is positioned to receive light from the glass ball and to supply the received light to a light receiving structure. The glass ball provides most of the optical power of the lens system so that the second lens provides only minor optical correction. The lens system is mounted by means of a molded plastic body that extends axially along the optical axis with the second lens molded into the body. The body includes a light inlet end and a light outlet in a surface lateral to the optical axis and defines a glass ball receiving cavity adjacent the light inlet end fixedly gripping the glass ball.
