A magnetic element may be configured with at least a magnetic stack having first and second magnetically free layers that each has a predetermined stripe height from an air bearing surface (ABS). The first and second magnetically free layers can respectively be configured with first and second uniaxial anisotropies that are crossed in relation to the ABS and angled in response to the predetermined stripe height.

A data reader may be configured at least with a magnetic stack that has a first magnetic layer separated from a second magnetic layer by a non-magnetic spacer layer. The first magnetic layer may have an areal extent on an air bearing surface (ABS) that differs from the second magnetic layer while the second magnetic layer can be configured with a first plurality of linear sidewalls that are each angled with respect to a second plurality of linear sidewalls of the first magnetic layer.

A transducer having an external contact surface includes a writer and a contact member. The writer has a portion extendable relative to an adjacent portion of the external contact surface. The contact member surrounds at least a portion of the extendable writer portion and is spaced from the extendable writer portion. The coefficient of thermal expansion of the contact member is approximately equal to the coefficient of thermal expansion of the extendable writer portion.

A data reader may be configured at least with detector and injector stacks that each has a common spin accumulation layer. The detector stack may positioned on an air bearing surface (ABS) while the injector stack is positioned distal the ABS. The injector stack can have a diffusive layer with a larger spin diffusion length than mean free path.

A data reader may be configured at least with a magnetic stack positioned on an air bearing surface (ABS) and contacting a spin depolarizing layer that is a minority spin current carrier. The spin depolarizing layer can have a thickness and spin diffusion length corresponding to a net zero spin polarization at an interface of the magnetic stack and spin depolarizing layer.

An apparatus can be generally directed to a magnetic stack having a magnetically free layer positioned on an air bearing surface (ABS). The magnetically free layer can be biased to a predetermined magnetization in various embodiments by a biasing structure that is coupled with the magnetically free layer and positioned distal the ABS.

A data storage device may be generally directed to a data transducing head capable of magnetoresistive data reading. Such a data transducing head may be configured with at least a trilayer reader that contacts and is biased by a coupling feature. The coupling feature may have a smaller extent from an air bearing surface (ABS) than the trilayer reader.

A magnetic shield that is capable of enhancing magnetic reading. In accordance with various embodiments, a magnetic element has a magnetically responsive stack shielded from magnetic flux and biased to a predetermined default magnetization by at least one lateral side shield that has a transition metal layer disposed between first and second ferromagnetic layers.

A head assembly including one or more transducer elements for controlling head-media spacing is disclosed. The assembly includes detection circuitry configured to receive an input detection signal responsive to the spacing between the head and the data storage media and provide an output measure indicative of the head-media spacing. The output signal is utilized by control circuitry to provide a control input to one of a plurality of transducer elements on the head to protrude a localized portion of the head to adjust head-media spacing.

An apparatus and associated method are generally directed to a magnetic sensor. A sensor may have a stack with an air bearing surface (ABS) and a biasing surface opposite the ABS. A biasing yoke can be disposed between a biasing magnet and the stack with the biasing magnet having a lower magnet moment than the biasing yoke.

A magnetic element is generally provided that can be implemented as a transducing head. Various embodiments may configure a magnetic stack having a magnetically free layer with a predetermined magnetization. A side shield lamination can be separated from the magnetic stack on an air hearing surface (ABS) and biased to a bias magnetization that opposes the predetermined magnetization.

Various embodiments can have a data read stack positioned on an air bearing surface (ABS). The data read stack may be disposed between first and second buffer layers, where at least one of the buffer layers can be configured to provide a predetermined shunt ratio for the data read stack.

A magnetic element is generally provided that can be implemented as a transducing head. Various embodiments may configure a magnetic stack to be separated from a side shield lamination on an air bearing surface (ABS). The side shield lamination can be constructed to have a plurality of magnetic and non-magnetic layers each coupled to a top shield.

An apparatus and associated method may be used to produce a magnetic element capable of detecting changes in magnetic states. Various embodiments of the present invention are generally directed to a magnetically responsive lamination of layers with a first portion and a laterally adjacent second portion. The second portion having a predetermined roughness between at least two layers capable of producing orange-peel coupling.
