A method for detecting a thermal event of a battery, such as a traction battery of an electrified vehicle, includes monitoring a voltage of a group of parallel-connected cells of the battery. In response to confirming that the voltage of the group has a voltage rebound, a thermal event of the battery is detected. The detection of the thermal event may further depend on detection of a deviation of another operating parameter, such as temperature or pressure, of the battery.

This disclosure relates to an electrified vehicle configured to identify a battery condition, such as a thermal event and/or an open circuit event, by classifying a data set, and a corresponding method. In some aspects, the techniques described herein relate to an electrified vehicle, including: a battery pack; a sensor configured to generate signals indicative of a property of the battery pack; and a computing system including a controller and a classification model, wherein the controller is configured to interpret the signals from the sensor to obtain a data set corresponding to the properties of the battery pack over a period of time, and wherein the controller is configured to use the classification model to classify the data set as a thermal event.

This disclosure details exemplary traction battery pack venting systems for use in electrified vehicles. An exemplary traction battery pack system may include a venting system having one or more vent ducts for expelling battery vent byproducts from a battery pack. The vent ducts may include a thermal barrier configured to block heat emitted by the battery vent byproducts during cell venting events. In some embodiments, the thermal barrier includes a thermal barrier coating. In other embodiments, the thermal barrier includes both a thermal barrier coating and a thermal barrier layer. In still other embodiments, a second thermal barrier may be applied to vehicle components located near the battery pack for improving the thermal barrier properties.

This disclosure relates to a battery assembly of an electrified vehicle, and in particular to a battery pack with a vent gas passageway. An example battery assembly includes a battery array having a plurality of battery cells. Each of the battery cells includes a vent configured to release vent gas from a respective one of the battery cells. Further, the battery assembly includes an enclosure assembly surrounding the battery array, and a vent gas passageway within the enclosure assembly. The vent gas passageway includes a plurality of inlet ports, and each of the inlet ports is substantially aligned with a respective one of the vents.

A vehicle includes a traction battery and a cell monitor associated with battery cell strings each having associated connected battery cells. Each monitor is configured to generate a compressed encoded representation of the traction battery cell voltage measurements using artificial intelligence, such as a neural network. A battery controller in communication with each cell monitor receives the compressed encoded representation and generates reconstructed battery cell voltage measurements and controls the traction battery in response to the reconstructed traction battery cell voltage measurements. An unencoded battery cell voltage measurement may be communicated with the compressed encoded representation of the battery cell voltage measurements and used to validate the reconstructed measurements.

A traction battery venting system includes, among other things, an engine exhaust system that discharges engine exhaust gas to an area outside an electrified vehicle. The engine exhaust gas is emitted from an internal combustion engine of the electrified vehicle. The system further includes a sound deadening device of the engine exhaust system, a traction battery, and a battery vent system that communicates battery vent byproducts to the engine exhaust system at a position that is downstream from the sound deadening device. The battery vent byproducts are emitted from the traction battery of the electrified vehicle.

Methods and systems are provided for adjusting a position of an exhaust valve that regulates engine exhaust noise. In one example, the position of the exhaust valve is adjusted according to a distance between a first vehicle and a second vehicle. The exhaust valve may be adjusted to reduce an exhaust noise level when the distance between the first vehicle and the second vehicle is less than a threshold distance.
