Multi-functional fatty acid ester derivatives useful as biorenewable plasticizers

A composition is described that includes epoxy estolide fatty acid alkyl esters derived from triacylglycerol oil having an unsaturation of greater than 80 Iodine Value ('IV'). The esters are useful as plasticizers for a variety of polymers. Examples of triacylglycerol oils include vegetable oils such as soybean oil, castor oil, canola oil, rapeseed oil, sunflower oil, corn oil, safflower oil, camelina oil, and linseed oil.

Epoxy estolide fatty acid alkyl esters useful as biorenewable plasticizers

A composition includes estolide esters of vegetable oil fatty acid alkyl esters where the vegetable oil has an unsaturation greater than 90 IV. The fatty acid alkyl esters include unsaturated and saturated fatty acid alkyl esters, and each unsaturated fatty acid alkyl ester has greater than one estolide ester functionality.

Bio-renewable plasticizers derived from vegetable oil

Candle compositions are disclosed which include a high concentration of liquid oils, yet are solid due the incorporation of wax-monoesters; thereby enhancing the scope, quality and functionality of candles. The wax-monoesters may be obtained from natural plant based waxes, including rice bran wax. Candles based on the candle compositions and methods of making the compositions are also disclosed.

The invention provides a trans fat replacement system that is a stable and shelf storable mixture of an edible oil and an expanded, low-density carbohydrate for use in preparing baked goods having a reduced trans fat content. Depending upon formulation and processing, the mixture can have a consistency ranging from generally granular to an almost paste-like consistency. The trans fat replacement system consists of at least one edible oil and an expanded, low-density carbohydrate having a bulk density less than about 0.4 g/cc. The trans fat replacement system can be used to reduce or eliminate the amounts of traditional fats used to make baked goods. In one representative formulation, the trans fat replacement system can take the form of a generally, paste-like mixture that is suitable for spreading and is especially useful for the preparation of laminated dough products such as biscuits and croissants.

Disclosed is a method for reducing the sterol, for example cholesterol, content of sterol-containing substances such as fats and oils. The method provides an efficient and cost effective process based on the affinity of cholesterol and other sterols for amphipathic molecules that form hydrophobic, fluid bilayers, such as phospholipid bilayers. Aggregates of amphipathic molecules are contacted with, for example, a sterol-containing fat or oil in an aqueous environment and then mixed. Following adequate mixing, the sterol-reduced fat or oil is separated from the aqueous separation mixture. Alternatively, the correspondingly sterol-enriched fraction also may be isolated from the aqueous separation mixture.
