A neural network demodulator is used within a receiver to provide Inter Symbol Interference (ISI) channel equalization and to correct for I/Q/phase imbalance. The neural network is trained with a single integrated training step to simultaneously handle the channel impairments of ISI equalization and I/Q phase imbalance as opposed to prior art methods of separately addressing each channel impairment in sequence.

Adaptive demodulation method and apparatus using an artificial neural network to improve data recovery in high speed channels

A neural network is used within a receiver to discriminate a large set of input waveforms without using a very large set of conventional matched filters. The neural network is trained under actual line conditions as opposed to the requirement for ideal signals when using matched filters. The finite waveforms are based on digital modulation principles. A best match is made between a received waveform from the noisy channel and that of previously trained waveforms in order to extract data. Neural network based matched filter allows data be discriminated separately for each sub-carrier channel in the receiver. The neural network system allows fast processing and is suitable for high-speed data communications systems.

Use of neural network based matched filter for fast response time in high-speed communications channels

The proposed invention teaches basic principles of 'orthonormal transform' to be used to convert a set of discrete samples into a set of coefficient real samples that is contained in a finite field. The number of real values in each coefficient samples is finite and coded for transmission using digital modulation. It also teaches that handling of multi-path fading of Doppler effects implies that the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance as a function of Bit Energy/Noise (E/N) is close to the performance of Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN) channel. The effect of impairments is minimized and only the effect of thermal noise (AWGN) is maintained. The inventive apparatus is simple and maintains constant end-to-end response time, sustainable effective data rate and bounded error performance which is conducive to specify a Quality of Service (QoS) which is useful for service provisioning.

Use of orthonormal transformation for improving performance of digital transmission under heavily faded channels with doppler effects

A unique digital compression technology for increasing the information carrying capacity of a bandwidth limited communications path highway by using a combined coding and modulation technique. The inventive technology allows multiple independent modulated data streams to simultaneously and instantaneously share the same bandwidth without cross-channel interference. A matched filter is used to substantially reduce the error rate and utilizes a unique training method based on performing a spectral response test. An algorithm calculates the effect of the unique characteristics of the communications highway on the transmitted signal and generates an ideal signal stored in the matched filter for comparison with received signals.

Method and apparatus for increasing the channel capacity of a bandwidth limited communications path

Protection switching of a virtual private network is provided whereby working VPN paths and protection VPN paths are defined. The working VPN path is monitored for increased data traffic and failures, and in response, data is switched from the working VPN path to the protection VPN path. The working VPN path is monitored for a return to proper functioning and normal data conditions, and data is then switched back from the protection VPN path to the working VPN path. Additionally, data capacity is managed through virtual bandwidth classes, and different classes of qualities of service are provided.

Method and apparatus for protection switching in virtual private networks

A digital compression system including a superresonant filter, which adds samples of a digital data signal at a frequency to previous samples. The added samples are parts of sine or cosine waves, not the sum of the waves. The output signal is actually the summation of the samples. The samples are made during at most a single period. The disclosed superresonant filter has a settling time significantly faster than prior art narrow band filters. Prior art narrow band filters passing approximately 1 Hz require approximately 1 second to settle. The disclosed superresonant filter passing 1 Hz will settle in approximately 1 microsecond.

Coding system for minimizing digital data bandwidth

A method and apparatus for ensuring end-to-end QoS for user applications operating in multi-transport protocol environments while using PVC or SVC connection management procedures. A user application at a workstation having specific QoS requirements can selectively connect to one of a plurality of servers having varying QoS profiles, regardless of the transport protocols used in the underlying network. The user application initiates a session with a first QoS negotiator and a first QoS selector. The first QoS negotiator queries a second QoS negotiator for the QoS profile of a connected server. The second QoS negotiator, in conjunction with a second QoS selector, notifies the server of the address of the second QoS negotiator. The second QoS negotiator, in conjunction with the second QoS selector, sends a response to the first QoS negotiator and the first QoS selector indicating QoS profile and connection information of the server. The first QoS selector stores the received QoS profile and connection information in a database. The database is then queried by the user application to determine if a server having the desired QoS profile exists. If such a server does not exist, the QoS selection and negotation procedures are repeated and the database is updated. If a server having the desired QoS profile does exist, a PVC or SVC connection is established between the first and second QoS negotiators and QoS selectors, thereby ensuring end-to-end QoS for the user application and allowing the application to exchange data with the server using the PVC or SVC connection.

Method and apparatus for providing end-to-end quality of service in multiple transport protocol environments using permanent or switched virtual circuit connection management

A generic quality of service ('G-QoS') protocol and architecture for applications executing in multiple transport protocol environments is provided. G-QoS negotiators establish a QoS level for user applications by communicating over a network and exchanging network and application data via a G-QoS protocol that can be implemented using out-of-band ICMP messages. A Dynamic Profile Management Algorithm ('DPMA') allows the G-QoS negotiators to negotiate, establish, and maintain the desired QoS level between the user applications by providing real-time monitoring of application parameters including bandwith, buffer, and cache status information of the communicating client and server. A G-QoS applications programmer interface (&#x201c;API&#x201d;) allows network administrators to easily monitor and maintain the overall G-QoS architecture of the present invention. The G-QoS negotiators, G-QoS protocol, and DPMA form a generic QoS architecture that provides guaranteed QoS for user applications.

Generic quality of service protocol and architecture for user applications in multiple transport protocol environments

Lossless delivery of an ATM cell based service over connection oriented multi-path networks is assured. The applicable network could be wired (to include optical fiber), or wireless, or a combination of these. A &ldquo;queue&rdquo; is added into the user information stream at the source node of the protection domain, and a working path receive queue is also introduced at the destination node. A low bandwidth sequence numbered (F like) OAM cell stream is carried cyclically from the source to the destination node over both the working and protection paths. A pre-determined delay of the sending of information over the network is employed. Upon an indication of an impairment of service, the delayed information is sent over a second path.

High integrity transport for time critical multimedia networking

A method and apparatus for the transparent, non-disruptable transfer of data, particularly multimedia data, through any packet-based network, such as an ATM network is provided. The method of the present invention includes the step of setting a primary path and a secondary path between nodes of a network, or of a network domain. Accordingly, when a switch or node establishes a Virtual Path (VP) to another switch with specified effective bandwidth, it also has an alternate VP that is available, although no bandwidth is actually used. The method of the present invention further includes the step of optimizing the available capacity of the system through management actions. For handling congestion and resource failures, the total effective bandwidth on each physical link is categorized in terms of idle capacity (unused or available), used capacity (for existing VPs), and spare capacity. When a resource failure occurs, the idle capacity is used for real-time switching of the VP and service is not disrupted. This is accomplished by an alarm indication management cell which is delivered when a resource problem is encountered. This management cell sets forth the secondary path and the bandwidth associated therewith. On the other hand, if idle capacity does not exist, the spare capacity is used, while the bandwidth of all other VPs is reconfigured using virtual bandwidth optimization. Therefore, service disruption does not occur. In a wireless, mobile network, the present invention monitors node movement and takes management actions on the basis of such node movement to prevent service disruption.

An improved coding system for digital transmission compression applicable as a digital compression algorithm for increasing the bandwidth of telecommunications and broadcasting networks. The improved coding system operates in the transmission regime, not in baseband (source) so that a transmission channel having a capacity of 1 Mbit/s can deliver N Mbit/s, where N bits in parallel are combined to be delivered in the 1 Mbit/s channel. The system includes the steps of simultaneously encoding a first group of parallel binary bits into a digitized voltage amplitude signal in a predetermined bit interval, modulating a carrier with the digitized voltage amplitude signal, transmitting the modulated carrier over a bandwidth limited communications highway having intrinsic noise therein, demodulating said modulated carrier signal and receiving said digitized voltage amplitude signal, said demodulating means substantially cancelling said intrinsic noise and improving said output signal to noise ratio; and decoding the digitized voltage amplitude signal received in the predetermined bit interval into a second group of parallel binary bits which correspond to the first group of parallel binary bits. The digital compression algorithm is applicable to telephone networks, including telephone twisted pair (TTP) wiring, coaxial cables for telephony, data transmission, and video transmission with or without accompanying sound; microwave, cellular, mobile, and personal communications networks; radio and satellite networks and can be realized physically in very-large-scale-integrated (VLSI) chips.
