A method for repositioning or repairing holes in metal substrates such as metal components used in jet engines and the like. The hole to be repositioned or repaired is enlarged and a recess is formed at each end of the enlarged hole. A deformable metal insert is then inserted within the enlarged hole and then subjected to physical forces so as to cause it to deform and frictionally engage the walls of the recesses and the enlarged hole so that the insert becomes axially fixed therein. A new, repositioned hole can then be formed in the fixed insert that extends completely therethrough.

Method for repositioning or repairing holes

An apparatus produces compressive stress in a component surface. Positioning of a contact area of the component surface is controlled to situate a contact area of the component surface relative to an indenter element. The indenter element is fixtured to cause an indentation at the contact area. The force of the indentation is measured as the indenter element contacts the contact area, and controlled responsive to the amount of force measured and the desired compression. The system allows deep compressive stresses to be generated without the surface damage associated with conventional peening.

The present invention provides a method and apparatus including a rotor mountable fixture for guiding a cutting tool powered by a hand held air motor to machine a gas turbine engine rotor without removing the rotor from its mountings in the engine. In one particular embodiment the fixture includes a root having the same contour as a blade root slot of a rotor, a base having a platform attached to the root, and a machining guide in the form of a bushing restrained in a guide slot operable to receive and guide a hand held air motor powered cutting tool for machining the rotor. The present invention provides an accurate means to machine a gas turbine engine rotor without removing the rotor from its mounting. In one particular embodiment a method for machining the rotor in the field is provided using a hand held air motor to power a machining tool to cut a blade damper pocket in the dovetail slot of a pressure compressor rotor.

Fixture and method for machining rotors

The present invention provides an apparatus to repair gouged out and damaged leading and trailing edges of gas turbine engine blades, particularly fan blades, by cutting away a curved section including the damaged area and forming a blend radius along the repaired edge. The apparatus includes a unique machine tool guide having an adjustable cutting depth guide and mountable to a hand held machine tool driver, such as a 90 degree angle head air motor, that drives a rotary cutter.
