A social networking system allows a user to create an event in the social networking system while viewing a web page from a third-party website from a domain different than the social networking system. A widget or other social plug-in is included in the web page, and user interaction with the widget communicates information from the web page to the social networking system. An event object is created in the social networking system from the information from the web page. The social networking system may perform various actions to increase user interaction with the created event object, such as identifying additional users to invite the event or identifying users attending the event to other users.

Incorporating external event information into a social networking system

A social networking system suggests events for a target user based on stored data in the social networking system related to the target user and to events. The social networking system may suggest events based on the target user's affinity for, connections with, or interactions with objects in the social networking system connected to or otherwise associated with the events. For example, an event is suggested to a target user if users connected to the target user already accepted an invitation to the event. As another example, an event organized by a particular entity is suggested to the target user because of interactions between the target user and other content provided by the entity. Invitations to suggested events may be presented to the target user via a client device, allowing the target user to easily join a suggested event.

Generating event suggestions for users from social information

In one embodiment, a method includes identifying candidate content associated with a user of a computing device, selecting, from the candidate content, cache content to be stored in cache storage of the computing device for access by the user when the computing device does not have network connectivity, and storing the cache content in the cache storage of the computing device. The cache content may be based on information associated with a user node that represents the user in a social graph. The cache content may include entities liked by the user, friends of the user, and/or entities of interest to the user. The cache content includes web pages accessed by the user and/or web pages referenced by content created by the user. The cache content may include information related to past, current, and/or predicted actions of the user, such as social network posts, travel itineraries, and geographic locations.

Identifying and caching content for offline use

In one embodiment, a method includes inferring an intent of the target user to post to a social-networking system based on one or more information items. One or more information items may be assembled that are relevant to one or more of the information items from which the intent to post was inferred. A prompt to post may be sent to the target user comprising one or more of the assembled information items. One or more indications of one or more reactions of the target user may be received from a client system of the target user. The one or more reactions of the target user may be used in both inferring a future intent to post on the part of future target users and assembling information items for future target users.

Eliciting user sharing of content

A social networking system that provides a system allowing users of the social networking system to define future plans, whereby users of the social networking system who view the plan are permitted to add themselves to the plan independent of whether they were explicitly specified as attendees of the plan. The social networking system is capable of auto-filling some missing plan details through inference. The social networking system is also capable of merging similar plans together.
