An agile grid forming control system for power electronics converters integrates a dual-time scale control strategy to provide grid-forming operation while compensating for extreme power demand variations. A high-speed digital processor collects real-time electrical measurements at a point of interconnection and dynamically adjusts power output to stabilize grid conditions. The system is particularly suited for AI data centers, microgrids, and other applications with high-variability loads. The system enhances grid stability, enables efficient energy storage integration, and reduces reliance on bulk grid infrastructure.

Agile grid forming control for compensating collocated extreme load variability

An illustrative embodiment described herein is a stacked direct current to direct current (DC-DC) converter including a first DC bus coupled to a first one of a power source and a power load and a second DC bus coupled to a second one of the power source and the power load. The stacked DC-DC converter includes a first half-bridge coupled to a first portion the first DC bus and a second half-bridge circuit coupled to a second portion the DC first bus. The stacked DC-DC converter includes a third half-bridge circuit coupled to a first portion of the second DC bus and a fourth half-bridge circuit coupled to a second portion of the second DC bus. The stacked DC-DC converter includes a first magnetic element coupling the first half-bridge circuit to the third half-bridge circuit and a second magnetic element coupling the second half-bridge circuit to the fourth half-bridge circuit.

Stacked DC-DC converter

An electrical power conversion system includes an alternating current (AC)-to-direct current (DC) power converter that is configured to convert power between AC power and DC power. The AC-to-DC power converter includes switching legs that each connect to a phase of the AC power. Each of the switching legs includes two electronic devices connected in series with one another between a positive DC bus terminal and a negative DC bus terminal. The electrical power conversion system also includes a DC-to-DC power converter that is configured to convert power between the DC bus power and DC terminal power via a positive DC terminal and a negative DC terminal. The DC-to-DC power converter is configured to control a differential voltage between the positive and negative DC terminals and a common-mode voltage that is between a neutral of the AC power and each of the positive and negative DC terminals.

Power converter with controllable DC offset

A configurable power converter includes a chassis, a plurality of circuit terminals, power conversion hardware, and a controller. The chassis has an exterior and defines an interior cavity. The plurality of circuit terminals are coupled to the exterior of the chassis. The power conversion hardware is disposed within the interior cavity of the chassis and connected to the plurality of circuit terminals. The power conversion hardware includes at least one of a plurality of electrical switches, a plurality of capacitors, or a plurality of inductors. The controller is configured to detect a hardware configuration of the plurality of circuit terminals and the power conversion hardware, determine a maximum voltage limit and a maximum current limit for each of the plurality of circuit terminals based on the hardware configuration, and operate the plurality of switches based on at least one of (i) the hardware configuration or (ii) the maximum voltage limit and the maximum current limit for each of the plurality of circuit terminals.

Reconfigurable power converter

A configurable power converter includes an interchangeable face plate mounted to a chassis and circuit terminals mounted to the face plate. Each of the circuit terminals are configurable as input or output circuit terminals. The power converter also includes a direct current bus within the chassis that includes a positive terminal and a negative terminal. The power converter also includes electrical switches connected between the positive and negative terminals. The power converter further includes a controller that operates the electrical switches to provide electrical power to the direct current bus from power received from the input circuit terminals and operates the electrical switches to provide power to the output circuit terminals from power of the direct current bus. The input and output circuit terminals can each support alternating current power or direct current power.
