Systems and methods for the ultrasonic disruption of biofilm and algae growth on underwater structures utilize an ultrasonic actuator that produces a natural frequency in the ultrasonic range. In some embodiments, the ultrasonic actuator includes one or more piezoelectric transducers.

Systems and methods for disruption of biofilm and algal growth

Improved drilling systems and methods may include piezoelectric actuator(s) in a drill string at one or more locations to minimize or eliminate stick-slip while drilling. For example, piezoelectric actuators may be incorporated into the rock bit or drill bit in the openings in the bit body for receiving the cutters. As another example, the piezoelectric actuators may be incorporated into an independent module that is place on or in the drill string. The independent module may be placed between the top drive and the drill bit or at the top of the drill string near a top drive.

A system, including a flow control system, including a valve, a first cylinder including a piston coupled to the valve, wherein the piston moves axially within the first cylinder to transition the valve between open and closed positions, a magnetorheological (MR) fluid within the first cylinder configured to axially move the piston, and an MR fluid device configured to magnetize the MR fluid to control axial movement of the piston.

A system, in certain embodiments, includes a power supply. The power supply includes an ultracapacitor configured to be charged by a DC source. The power supply also includes a first switch that enables charging of the ultracapacitor by the DC source when in a closed position and disables charging of the ultracapacitor when in an open position. The power supply further includes a second switch configured to enable discharging of the ultracapacitor when in a closed position and to disable discharging of the ultracapacitor when in an open position. As the ultracapacitor is discharged, a current is supplied to actuate a shape memory alloy element.

A system, in certain embodiments, includes an accumulator having a first plate with a first plurality of holes and a second plate with a second plurality of holes. The second plate is positioned at an offset from the first plate, and the second plate is moveable relative to the first plate to adjust a fluid pressure. The accumulator also includes a plurality of shape memory alloy wires extending between the first and second plates, wherein the plurality of shape memory alloy wires extend through the first and second plurality of holes.

A system, in certain embodiments, includes a multi-layer composite strip of pipe dampening materials, comprising a first layer of a first material, a second layer of a second material disposed adjacent to the first layer of material, and a third layer of a third material disposed adjacent to the second layer of material, wherein the second material comprises a viscoelastic material, and wherein the multi-layer composite strip of pipe dampening materials is configured to be affixed to an outer surface of a section of pipe. In certain embodiments, the first layer and the third layer may have stiffness values that are substantially different from each other. The difference in stiffness values may enable relative motion in the first layer and the third layer to be generated during vibration of the section of pipe, and the energy may be dissipated by the viscoelastic material, thereby dampening vibration of the section of pipe. In certain embodiments, multiple strips of pipe dampening materials may be used.

The second plate is positioned at an offset from the first plate, and the second plate is moveable relative to the first plate to adjust a fluid pressure. The accumulator also includes a plurality of shape memory alloy wires extending between the first and second plates, wherein the plurality of shape memory alloy wires extend along the first and second wire guides.

A system, in certain embodiments, includes an accumulator having a first plate, a second plate positioned at an offset from the first plate, and a shape memory alloy wire extending between the first and second plates from a first wire portion to a second wire portion. The shape memory alloy wire is configured to move the first or second plate to adjust a fluid pressure in response to an electrical current through the shape memory alloy wire. The accumulator also includes a wire clamp assembly coupled to the first wire portion and/or the second wire portion of the shape memory alloy wire.
