Methods and systems for managing energy sources and energy consumers in an integrated system are provided. Certain subject matter presented herein relates to automatically scheduling jobs and their sub-tasks to maximize profit by comparing power source configurations and determining the best job schedule for the power source configurations. This system broadly involves two sub-problems: determining the best power source configuration and determining the best job schedule for the given power source configuration.

Management of power sources and jobs in an integrated power system

A method of operating a battery pack includes identifying a plurality of batteries in the battery pack, estimating a state of charge of each of the plurality of the batteries, obtaining a plurality of parameters of each of the plurality of the batteries, and determining, selectively, a charge current or a discharge current for each of the plurality of batteries using the state of charge and the plurality of parameters of each of the plurality of the batteries.

Intelligent composable multi-function battery pack

One embodiment provides a method including: prior to an initial period of operation of an appliance, storing in memory a first set of characteristics of the appliance; during an initial period of operation of the appliance, learning a second set of characteristics of the appliance; during subsequent operation of the appliance: detecting an adverse operating condition of the appliance; and based on the first set of characteristics, the second set of characteristics and the detected adverse operating condition, determining a corrective action to be taken with regard to the appliance, the corrective action comprising at least one of: switching off the appliance and warning a user of the detected adverse operating condition. Managing electricity usage for an appliance

The use of a just-in-time market for EV's (electric vehicles) to buy and sell energy from each other directly. Such a market enables the following: sellers to advertise the amount of energy they are willing to sell and the minimum selling price; buyers to advertise the amount of energy they are interested in buying and the maximum buying price. The market works at any location and at any time as long as there is a buyer and seller. The communications are directly between buyers and sellers without the involvement of any third parties.

Vehicle-to-vehicle energy market system

Systems and methods for cognitive alarm management in a power grid are described. In one embodiment, sensor measurements are transformed to determine the state of a power grid. Given current state information relating to the power grid, various analyses of the alarms may be conducted to produce various rankings of the alarms (e.g., by severity, graph analyses, etc.). In an embodiment, using power flow analysis, an optimal ranking is identified from the rankings in which a causal alarm is prioritized for resolution. Given the resolution of the causal alarm, remaining alarms (either all or a sub-set) may be resolved without further action. Thus, an embodiment provides an appropriate ranking of alarm conditions in a power grid such that the optimal resolution of alarms may be achieved. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

System and method for cognitive alarm management for the power grid

Methods and arrangements for managing electricity generation in a distributed electricity generation system. A plurality of data inputs are received comprising: a sensed state of a power grid; a sensed state of local energy storage; and a sensed demand of a local electricity load. The data inputs are combined, and, based on the combined data inputs, there is determined a destination of electricity that is generated in the distributed electricity generation system. The at least one destination is selected from the group consisting of: a local electricity load, the power grid, and the local energy storage. Injecting electricity into a grid from distributed generation

Methods and arrangements for localizing an outage in a power grid. An outage is detected in a power grid, the power grid including interconnected nodes. At least one candidate network topology (in the power grid) with respect to the outage is determined, and power consumption information and measured voltages relative to the nodes in the power grid are received. Voltage at a plurality of the nodes in the power grid is estimated based on the received power consumption information and on the at least one candidate network topology, and a location of the outage is estimated, based on the estimated node voltages and measured voltages. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

Electric outage detection and localization

Methods and arrangements for load-shifting time deferrable devices. An electrical load scheduling mechanism is provided, and this is placed in communication with an appliance. Electrical grid load conditions are assessed, and delivery of electrical power to the appliance is scheduled via the electrical load scheduling mechanism. The scheduling includes altering a predetermined delivery of electric power to the appliance based on the assessed electrical grid conditions.

Plug arrangements for alleviating peak loads

Methods and arrangements for calculating a power budget. Data are received, the data including data relating to a current state of an electrical grid at a power-drawing location which draws at least one variable electrical load, the at least one variable electrical load being subject to variable pricing. At least one prediction is determined, the at least one prediction pertaining to a future state of the electrical grid and a future electrical load to be drawn at the power-drawing location. A power budget is thereupon calculated, with respect to the power-drawing location, based on the data and the at least one prediction. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

Methods and arrangements for providing appliance power management. A connector arrangement is provided for interconnecting an appliance with a power supply. There is identified, with respect to the appliance connected to the power supply, at least one of: an appliance category, a current operating state of the appliance, and a current standby state of the appliance. In response to the identifying of the at least one of: an appliance category, an appliance operating state and an appliance standby state, there is detected at least one of: anomalous appliance behavior and deficient power quality. Also, a control action is undertaken relative to the detection of the at least one of: anomalous appliance behavior and deficient power quality. Other variants and embodiments are broadly contemplated herein.

A method for improving power factor includes collecting consumption data of at least one appliance, building a consumption profile for each of the at least one appliance based on the consumption data collected, reconstructing reactive power consumption of each of the at least one appliance based on the consumption profile for each of the at least one appliance, and computing a schedule for each of the at least one appliance in accordance the reactive power consumption of each of the at least one appliance to improve power factor while respecting at least one constraint.

Power factor

Methods and arrangements for managing implementation of a power transformer. There is determined at least one parameter currently relating to operation of a transformer, as well as a revenue value currently assigned to the transformer. There is determined a depreciation value currently assigned to the transformer. There is determined a power output for the transformer for a future time slot that increases total revenue with respect to a life cycle of the transformer, the power output being determined based on the at least one parameter, the revenue value, and the depreciation value.

Condition-based management of power transformers

Methods and arrangements for determining a network connectivity model. Meters are interfaced with, and periodic synchronous power-related measurements are collected from different meters. Measurement messages are sent to a predetermined location for being consolidated and processed, and a network connectivity model is thereupon determined.
