Suction molds used in the suction removal process must first be prepared ore they can receive vitrified radioactive waste materials. A method is disclosed for preparing the suction mold which includes a suction pipe welded into the base of the mold with a desired-break location whereat the suction pipe is broken off during the suction removal process. An evacuation stub is mounted in the mouth of the suction pipe and communicates with the interior of the mold. The method of the invention includes evacuating the mold through the evacuation stub and then heating the mold to remove moisture and organic impurities. The mold is then filled with a dry inert gas and the evacuation stub is cleaned. The mold is then evacuated to a predetermined residual pressure. Thereafter, the evacuation stub is cold-press welded so as to close off the interior of the mold from the ambient.

Method of preparing a suction mold for receiving vitrified radioactive

The invention relates to a melting furnace for vitrifying highly radioactive waste, comprising a melting tank of refractory material and a furnace upper section enclosed by insulation and a steel container. The furnace contains electrodes of ceramic block material for direct heating which comprise part of the wall of the melting tank. Electrical conductors project from the electrodes through the top of the furnace. In order to avoid the danger of the melt flowing into the gaps between the electrodes and the surrounding tank wall and shorting the electrodes, the melt level is maintained below the top surface of the electrodes. In one form of the invention, the electrodes are recessed along the upper edge of the front side facing the melting tank, which recess accommodates a refractory block which is highly resistant to the corrosive effect of the waste at the melt level. The electrodes require no cooling, and are insulated on their back sides which avoids temperature differentials within the electrodes.

Melting furnace for vitrifying highly radioactive waste

A device for evacuating, filling and closing final storage containers for radioactive materials mixed with molten glass, comprising a suction pipe connected to the container, a meltable closure for said pipe and a closable evacuation connection fitting mounted in said meltable closure. The container is evacuated through the fitting whereupon the fitting is sealed closed to preserve the vacuum. When the suction pipe is dipped into the molten glass to fill the container, the closure melts and with the glass is sucked into the container. In another form the device also includes a protective sleeve surrounding the fitting, closed at its outer end with a meltable plate which also serves as a heat radiation shield. The shield prevents premature melting of the meltable closure, i.e. melting from the heat in the glass furnace prior to immersion of the suction pipe in the molten glass. The invention also includes a closure for the filled container which may be soldered at its periphery to the container wall by induction heating to seal the container.

The invention is directed to a method for making a glass block containing dioactive fission products in a metal vessel. The method includes the steps of placing the radioactive glass melt in the metal vessel and cooling the same therein. To minimize the formation of fissures in the glass block which is formed, the inner wall surfaces of the metal vessel are coated with a carbon material. The metal vessel is then placed in a thermally-insulating receptacle. The metal vessel is then filled with a radioactive glass melt emanating from a glass melting furnace and, after the filling step, is cooled slowly in the heat insulating receptacle. A container assembly for use in performing the method of the invention is also disclosed.

A device for disposing of a contaminated suction tube connected to a storage container for glass-enclosed radioactive waste material by inserting the tube in the container for ultimate disposal with the container. The device consists of a metal sleeve that is mounted on the bottom wall of the container and extends upwardly into the container and an inner tube which slides in the sleeve. The suction tube is connected to the lower end of the inner tube. Detachable connecting means, such as solder, fixes the inner tube and hence the suction tube to the sleeve until the glass filling operation is over. At this point the solder melts and the suction tube and inner tube are free to be inserted into the container by sliding the inner tube upwardly in the sleeve.
