A process for the preparation of N-methylalkylamines of the formula CH.sub.3 --NH--CH.sub.2 --R in which R is an aliphatic radical having 1 to 3 carbon atoms, by reacting an aldehyde of the formula R--CHO with an amine of the formula R'--NH.sub.2 to give a Schiff base, removing the water of reaction, and reacting the Schiff base with methylamine and hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst.

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of a particularly pure monochloroacetic acid, in which, in a first step, a hydrogenation of a mixture of mono- and dichloroacetic acid is carried out to a residual content of dichloroacetic acid of 400 to 600 ppm and, in a second step, this mixture is subjected to melt crystallization. The hydrogenation is carried out with a heterogeneous catalyst which comprises 0.1-5.0% by weight of palladium and in which active charcoal or silicon dioxide is used as the support.

The reduction of triacetonamine with hydrazine also succeeds continuously by reactive distillation if the hydrazone is first formed and this is continuously transported to the distillation bottoms comprising a high-boiling solvent and an alkali at the base of a distillation column and the resulting 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine is distilled off as an azeotrope. In this procedure a hydrazine/triacetonamine ratio of 1.5:1 to 2.0:1 is sufficient, in comparison with the conventional synthesis, the product yield being able to be considerably increased (&gt;90%). Moreover, the amounts of alkali and solvent used can be considerably reduced.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of dichloroacetyl chloride by oxidation of trichloroethylene under pressure and at elevated temperature in the presence of a certain secondary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amine of the formula HNR.sup.1 R.sup.2 in which R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are identical or different and are an alkyl radical having 1 to 10 carbon atoms, where at least one of the radicals R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 has a tertiary structure, or R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 together with the nitrogen atom form a 5- to 10-membered ring, where at least one of the carbon atoms adjacent to the nitrogen is a tertiary carbon atom. Good yields of the acid chloride and low trichloroethylene oxide contents are obtained in one process step.

A process for the preparation of methylamines by the reaction of amines, formaldehyde and hydrogen as starting materials on a fixed-bed catalyst in the liquid phase under pressure and preferably at elevated temperature. The starting materials contain a reduced percentage of water. They are heated to a predetermined temperature apart from each other, and then mixed with each other in the presence of the fixed-bed catalyst.

A process for the preparation of 2,2'-oxybis[N,N-dimethylethanamine] by reaction of 2,2'oxybisethanamine, hydrogen and formaldehyde having a reduced percentage of water on conventional fixed-bed hydrogenation catalysts. The reactants, especially the amine and formaldehyde, are heated to a predetermined temperature separate from each other, and then mixed with each other in the presence of the fixed-bed catalyst.
