The present disclosure is directed to a mixed oxide composition comprising manganese, aluminum and/or magnesium, and a rare earth element; a method of making the mixed oxide composition; a NOx adsorber comprising the mixed oxide composition; an exhaust system for internal combustion engines comprising the NOx adsorber; and a method for reducing NOx in an exhaust gas that employs the NOx adsorber.

Mixed oxide and its use as NOx adsorber

A NOadsorber catalyst and its use in an emission treatment system for internal combustion engines, is disclosed. The NOadsorber catalyst composition comprises a support material, one or more platinum group metals disposed on the support material, and a NOstorage material.

SCR-active molecular-sieve based catalysts with improved low-temperature performance are made by heating a molecular-sieve in a non-oxidizing atmosphere with steam (hydrothermal treatment), or in a reducing atmosphere without steam (thermal treatment), at a temperature in the range of 600-900&#xb0; C. for a time period from 5 minutes to two hours. The resulting SCR-active iron-containing molecular sieves exhibit a selective catalytic reduction of nitrogen oxides with NHor urea at 250&#xb0; C. that is at least 50% greater than if the iron-containing molecular-sieve were calcined at 500&#xb0; C. for two hours without performing the hydrothermal or thermal treatment.

A catalyst article including a substrate with an inlet side and an outlet side, a first zone and a second zone, where the first zone comprises a passive NOx adsorber (PNA) comprising a platinum group metal and a base metal, both on a molecular sieve, and an ammonia slip catalyst (ASC) comprising an oxidation catalyst comprising a platinum group metal on a support, and a first SCR catalyst; where the second zone comprises a catalyst selected from the group consisting of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a diesel exotherm catalyst (DEC); and where the first zone is located upstream of the second zone. The first zone may include a bottom layer including a blend of: (1) the oxidation catalyst and (2) the first SCR catalyst; and a top layer including a second SCR catalyst, the top layer located over the bottom layer.
