A catalytic process for the deoxygenation of an organic substrate, such as a biomass or bio-oil, is described. The catalytic process is conducted in the presence of a gaseous mixture containing both hydrogen and nitrogen. The presence of nitrogen in the gaseous mixture gives rise inter-aliato increased catalytic activity and/or increased selectivity for aromatic reaction products.

Uses of magnesium phosphate containing minerals

New layered double hydroxide materials useful as intermediates in the formation of catalysts are described, as well as methods of preparing the layered double hydroxides. Also described are catalysts suitable for catalysing the hydrogenation of COto methanol, as well as methods for preparing the catalysts. The LDH-derived catalysts of the invention are active in the hydrogenation of COto methanol, and show improved activity with respect to Cu/ZnO catalysts derived from copper-zinc hydroxycarbonate precursors.

Surface-modified layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are disclosed, as well as processes by which they are made, and uses of the LDHs in composite materials. The surface-modified LDHs of the invention are more organophilic than their unmodified analogues, which allows the LDHs to be incorporated in a wide variety of materials, wherein the interesting functionality of LDHs may be exploited.

SiO-layered double hydroxide microspheres and methods of making them

The invention relates to layered double hydroxide (LDH) materials and in particular to new methods of preparing improved LDH materials which have intercalated active anionic compounds (improved LDH-active anion materials). The improved LDH-active anion materials are characterized by their high degree of robustness, demonstrated by their high Particle Robustness Factor values, and by their ability to retain substantially all of the intercalated active anionic compound, in the absence of ion exchange conditions and/or at pH&#x3e;4.

The present invention relates to a process for modifying a layered double hydroxide (LDH), the process comprising, a. providing a material comprising a layered double hydroxide of formula: [MM'(OH)](X).bHO wherein M and M&#x2032; are metal cations, z is 1 or 2, x is 0.1 to 1, b is 0 to 5, y is 3 or 4, X is an anion, n is 1 to 3 and q is determined by x, y and z, b. optionally washing the material at least once with a mixture of water and a mixing solvent miscible with water, and c. washing the material obtained in step a or b at least once with at least one first solvent, the first solvent being miscible with water and having a solvent polarity P&#x2032;.
