An information storage system is described which comprises a reading device () and an optical record carrier () having at least two information planes (). The radiation from the record carrier is converted in a detection system () into a detection signal () which is applied to a detection circuit (). In order that this circuit can derive the read information from the detection signal in a reliable manner, the interference signals generated by the information planes which are not to be read should comply with a requirement, referred to as the interference requirement, which is characteristic of the detection circuit. Values for the parameters of the record carrier, such as the thickness of the layers between the information planes and the reflection and transmission coefficients of the information planes then follow from this interference requirement.

A device () comprising a sealed cavity () containing n volumes of fluids () is described, where n is an integer and n&#x2267;2. Each volume of fluid is substantially immiscible with every contiguous volume of fluid. The cavity is defined by an interior surface divided into n continuous areas (), each continuous area corresponding to and being in contact with a respective one of the volumes of fluid. The wettability of each area is such that each volume of fluid preferentially adheres to the corresponding continuous area rather than any one of the continuous areas adjacent to the corresponding area.

The invention relates to an objective system ( ) which is suitable for use in an optical scanning device ( ). The lens system ( ) comprises a first lens, or objective lens ( ), and a second lens, or auxiliary lens ( ), which are mounted in fixed positions in a lens holder ( ). The objective lens comprises more than one half of a first spherical lens body ( ) having a first diameter (D ) and the auxiliary lens comprises more than one half of a second spherical lens body ( ) having a second diameter (D ) which is smaller than the first diameter. The objective lens and the auxiliary lens are surrounded by a first circular-cylindrical inner wall ( ) and a second circular-cylindrical inner wall ( ), respectively, of the lens holder, having a diameter which is substantially equal to the first and the second diameter, respectively. The inner walls can be provided in the lens holder in very accurate coaxial positions by use of conventional tools. In this manner, a very accurate centering of the objective lens and the auxiliary lens in the lens holder is achieved in a comparatively simple manner.

Optical scanning device

A transparent sheet is provided on both sides with a lenticular array (4,). The embossments (7) of at least one of the arrays (6) has a cross-section showing at least two bends (11-14), thereby improving the visibility of the Moire pattern formed by the two arrays. The sheet may be used as an anti-counterfeit mark.

A method of and an apparatus for writing and reading and/or erasing a multilayer record carrier (1) having a guide plane (2) and a plurality of recording planes (4) are described, using a guide beam (5) which cooperates with the guide plane (2) and a scanning beam (6) for at least writing in the recording planes (4). During writing the position of the scanning focus (36) formed by the scanning beam (6) is coupled to the focus (11) of the guide beam (5) which is actively controlled by using guide information which is present in the guide plane (2). During reading the scanning beam (6) is actively controlled by its own servosystem (20-28).
