A method and an apparatus for operating an electronic sensor and an electronic user input are provided. In one configuration, the apparatus includes a detection circuit configured to recognize a user input voltage generated by an electronic user input and a power supply configured to supply power to a detection circuit continuous without polling. In another configuration, the apparatus includes a port, a first power supply, a second power supply, and a control circuit configured to selectively couple the first power supply or the second power supply to the port based on a state of operation of an electronic sensor coupled to the port.

Techniques for adaptive gain adjustment in a signal processing path to achieve greater dynamic range. In an exemplary embodiment, a digital gain is applied to a digital input signal based on a detected level of the digital input signal. A corresponding analog gain is applied to the output of a digital-to-analog converter for converting the digital input signal to an analog signal, the product of the digital gain and the analog gain being kept constant. In an exemplary embodiment, a zero cross detector is employed to update the digital and analog gains only in the vicinity of zero crossings detected in the signal. In a further exemplary embodiment, a peak detector is employed to instantaneously adjust the digital and analog gains to avoid clipping in the signal path.

Adaptive gain adjustment system

A mobile wireless communication device has a speaker that functions as a vibration alert in addition to an audio output device. The speaker is selected from a group of speakers having variation in mechanical vibration resonant frequency. A drive signal sweeps back and forth across a sweep frequency range including the varient speaker mechanical vibration resonant frequencies. The drive signal drives the speaker causing it to vibrate at the mechanical vibration resonant frequency and in turn causing the mobile wireless communication device to vibrate, thereby alerting the user. In this manner, the same drive signal can be used to vibrate each speaker at the speaker's mechanical vibration resonant frequency despite the variation in mechanical vibration resonant frequencies among the group of speakers.

Wireless mobile communication device having a speaker vibration alert and method of using same

A system and method are presented for protecting multiplexed elements sharing a single electrical line. The system includes a plurality of elements connected to the electrical line, a switch connecting, to the electrical line, a first element in the plurality of elements, and a detection sub-system. The detection sub-system evaluates a signal on the electrical line. A detection sub-system control output supplies control signals in response to comparing a signal voltage level to a compatibility threshold value. The switch operates in response to accepting the control signals. The compatibility threshold value can be selected to equal the maximum voltage compatible with the first element. In some cases, the switch is a transistor.
