Techniques for implementing data plane isolation for VM mobility operations are provided. In one set of embodiments, these techniques include creating a virtual network path between a source host system and a destination host system participating in a VM mobility operation, which allows the host systems to exchange data for carrying out the operation without exposing their physical IP addresses to each other and without requiring the use of intermediate proxies. In certain embodiments, the virtual network path can be dynamically established upon initiation of the VM mobility operation and dynamically rolled back upon operation completion, thereby reducing the overhead of virtual path management.

Data plane isolation for virtual machine (VM) mobility operations

Techniques for implementing application-assisted VM provisioning operations, and in particular application-assisted live migration, are provided. In one set of embodiments, a hypervisor of a source host system can notify a guest application that the VM within which the guest application runs will be imminently live migrated from the source host system to a destination host system, prior to actually carrying out the live migration. In response, the guest application can execute one or more remedial actions that mitigate or avoid issues which may arise with respect to its runtime operation when the VM is stunned and switched over to the destination host system.

Application-assisted live migration

An example virtualized computing system includes: a host cluster having hosts and a virtualization layer executing on hardware platforms of the hosts, the virtualization layer supporting execution of virtual machines (VMs); an orchestration control plane integrated with the virtualization layer, the orchestration control plane including a master server executing in a first VM of the VMs; guest cluster infrastructure software (GCIS) executing in the master server, the GCIS configured to create a set of objects defining a container orchestration cluster, and manage lifecycles of second VMs of the VMs based on state of the set of objects; and guest software executing in the second VMs to implement the container orchestration cluster as a guest cluster of the host cluster, the guest software having components that interface with the GCIS.

Guest cluster deployed as virtual extension of management cluster in a virtualized computing system

Some embodiments of the invention provide a novel network architecture for deploying guest clusters (GCs) including workload machines for a tenant (or other entity) within an availability zone. The novel network architecture includes a virtual private cloud (VPC) deployed in the availability zone (AZ) that includes a centralized routing element that provides access to a gateway routing element of the AZ. In some embodiments, the centralized routing element provides a set of services for packets traversing a boundary of the VPC. The services, in some embodiments, include load balancing, firewall, quality of service (QoS) and may be stateful or stateless. Guest clusters are deployed within the VPC and use the centralized routing element of the VPC to access the gateway routing element of the AZ.

Hierarchical networking for nested container clusters

The disclosure provides an approach for the dynamic configuration of virtualized objects. A virtual object may be associated with a desired state defining a first plurality of resources for allocating to the virtual object. The first plurality of resources correspond to one or more resource types. Techniques include determining that each of a plurality of hosts does not have sufficient available resources to allocate the first plurality of resources to the virtual object according to the desired state. Techniques include selecting, a first host of the plurality of hosts to run the virtual object. Techniques include allocating a second plurality of resources to the virtual object from the first host, wherein the second plurality of resources is less than the first plurality of resources, and running the virtual object in the first host.

Dynamic configuration of virtual objects

An example virtualized computing system includes a host cluster having a virtualization layer executing on hardware platforms of hosts, the virtualization layer supporting execution of virtual machines (VMs), the VMs including pod VMs and native VMs, the pod VMs including container engines supporting execution of containers in the pod VMs, the native VMs including applications executing on guest operating systems; and an orchestration control plane integrated with the virtualization layer, the orchestration control plane including a master server having a pod VM controller to manage lifecycles of the pod VMs and a native VM controller to manage lifecycles of the native VMs.

An example method of checking compatibility of a guest cluster executing as a virtual extension of a host cluster having an orchestration control plane managing the guest cluster, the host cluster being part of a software defined data center (SDDC), is described. The method includes: receiving, at the orchestration control plane, a guest cluster infrastructure software (GCIS) compatibility document that specifies what a GCIS of the orchestration control plane requires and offers; receiving a request for a compatibility check on the guest cluster with respect to the GCIS; obtaining, at the orchestration control plane in response to the request, an SDDC compatibility documents for the SDDC and a guest cluster compatibility document for the guest cluster; computing, at the orchestration control plane, the compatibility check in response to the GCIS compatibility document, the SDDC compatibility document, and the guest cluster compatibility document; and transmitting a result of the compatibility check from the orchestration control plane to a virtual infrastructure (VI) control plane of the SDDC.

An example virtualized computing system includes a host cluster having hosts and a virtualization layer executing on hardware platforms of the hosts, the virtualization layer supporting execution of virtual machines (VMs), the VMs including pod VMs, the pod VMs including container engines supporting execution of containers in the pod VMs; and an orchestration control plane integrated with the virtualization layer, the orchestration control plane including a master server configured to manage the pod VMs and first VMs of the VMs. The virtualized computing system further includes a guest cluster executing in the first VMs and managed by the orchestration control plane, the guest cluster including a guest master server configured to, in cooperation with the master server, deploy first pods in the pod VMs.

To leverage the attributes of object storage for applications/systems created to interface with a network files system, an object storage backed file system can accept the defined file system commands from the applications/systems and transform the file system commands into requests that target object storage. The file system is 'backed' by object storage because attributes and content of file system entities are stored in objects. For instance, content data and metadata of a file are stored in objects in object storage. This object storage backed file system can be considered a bridge between a client perceived hierarchical file system namespace and a flat namespace of an object storage.

Instructions to fork a source VM are received, and execution of the source VM is temporarily stunned. A destination VM is created, and a snapshot of a first virtual disk of the source VM is created. A checkpoint state of the source VM is transferred to the destination VM. The source VM has one or more virtual disks. One or more virtual disks associated with the destination VM are created and reference the one or more virtual disks of the source VM. Execution of the destination VM is restored using the transferred checkpoint state and the virtual disks of the destination VM in a way that allows the source VM to also resume execution. Forking VMs using the described operation provisions destination VMs in a manner that makes efficient use of memory and disk space, while enabling source VMs to continue execution after completion of the fork operation.
