A curing apparatus comprises a curing chamber for accommodating a controlled atmosphere for a product being treated and an irradiator for providing radiation directed at the product. The curing chamber has spaced inlet and outlet openings for the product establishing a path of travel underneath the irradiator. First and second nozzle assemblies are disposed adjacent respective inlet and outlet openings for supplying inert gas into the chamber and maintaining an inert atmosphere within the chamber. The nozzle assemblies are removably secured to the chamber. A pre-chamber is provided in the nozzle assemblies to moderate the pressure distribution of the gas within the nozzle assemblies.

Ultraviolet curing apparatus using an inert atmosphere chamber

An apparatus for aligning the object focus of an elliptical reflector, such as positioned within the filament tube of a filament irradiating unit, with a directional axis, such as the centerline of the filament as it travels through the tube. The apparatus includes a support assembly for mounting the tube in a precisely fixed position, and three adjustable mounting assemblies connected to the support assembly at three spaced apart connection points for mounting the support assembly on a stationary base. Each of the mounting assemblies includes a pair of linkages each of adjustable length and forming two sides of a triangle with its apex at the point of connection to the support assembly. Each connection point is at the apex of an imaginary triangle such that adjustment of the mounting assemblies provides both lateral and tilting movements of the support assembly relative to the stationary base, and the central tube axis may be easily tilted, as well as moved laterally, into coincidence with the directional axis from multiple directions.

An ultraviolet curing chamber having a window comprised of multiple plates of quartz which are connected with a sealing device. The sealing device is comprised of a ribbon of high compliance material having a central member and cross members. The cross members are spread apart before application of the device to the quartz plates, and after application, the central member lies between the edges of the plates and the cross members, which have returned to a position closer to their original position before having been spread apart and are biased against the top and bottom surfaces of the plates, creating a tight seal.

Single ply paperboard containers are wax-coated by directing a relatively narrow spray band of atomized wax towards the interior surfaces of the containers being treated. The spray band is volumetrically asymmetrical and is oriented relative to the interior surfaces of the container such that its volumetric asymmetry is directed towards the bottom circumferential seam between the tubular side wall and bottom wall of the containers. In this manner, a minimal (but fluid-impervious effective) nonsaturating amount of wax will be applied to the interior surfaces of the container so as to preserve the vivid appearance of color graphics and/or indicia that may be printed on the exterior surface of the container. At the same time, the volumetric asymmetry and orientation of the spray band ensures that a maximum amount of wax will be applied at or near the circumferential bottom seam so that a fluid-impervious fillet seal may be established thereat. The appearance of the color graphics and/or indicia may optionally be further improved by the electrostatic spray application of a suitable lacquer. The applied lacquer, when dried, will thereby enhance the 'glossy' exterior appearance of the interior wax-coated containers.

A method is described for continuously producing a smooth, high gloss coating on a paper container comprising the steps of applying a substantially uniform coating of melted wax material to the outside surface of the container or sheet stock, maintaining the temperature of the wax coating above its melting point and above its congealing temperature, imparting a constant surface velocity to the outside surface of the container or sheet stock and applying a substantially uniform film of liquid coolant, particularly water, to the outside surface of the container or sheet stock whereby the surface velocity of the coolant is substantially equal to the surface velocity of the container or sheet stock.
