A surface mountable reflector suitable for packaging in a tape and reel format for positioning on a circuit substrate using pick-and-place robotics, and attachment using a solder reflow mounting technique, includes a metal sheet stamped to provide an all metal structure having a plurality of reflector surfaces having lower edges, and mounting pads that extend below the lower edges and outwardly of the reflector surfaces. The surface mountable reflectors are usable in a radiation emitting diode assembly including a diode solder-mounted to the circuit substrate with the surface mountable reflector affixed to the circuit substrate.

A surface mountable reflector for use with a surface-emitting diode (e.g., LED) includes at least one side wall, a roof, and a mounting pad extending from at least one side wall to facilitate mounting of the surface mountable reflector to a circuit substrate, with the roof of the surface mountable reflector disposed over a diode mounted on the circuit substrate, whereby simulation of an edge-emitting diode is achieved.

An optical element for uniformly dispersing light from a plurality of linearly aligned LEDs includes a body made of a transparent polymeric material, in which the body has a longitudinally extending center portion having a transverse cross-sectional profile that is uniform along the length of the optical element, and legs extending away from opposite sides of the center portion and extending downwardly to define a recess. The center portion has a top surface and a bottom surface that together define a longitudinally extending lens portion that collects light from the LEDs and refracts the light to produce a desired beam pattern. Uniformly and closely spaced apart transverse grooves can be provided on the top surface of the longitudinally extending lens portion to uniformly spread light on an illuminated surface and eliminate the appearance of dark and light areas on the lens portion when it is illuminated by the LEDs.

A backlit sign exhibiting a uniform illumination intensity pattern is achieved in a structure having a light transmissive front panel, a back panel, and a plurality of backlight modules disposed on a surface of the back panel that faces the front panel, wherein the backlight modules are spaced apart in an array, and each module includes at least one LED and a lens member having a lens portion that collects light from the LED and redirects the light into a generally square illumination pattern on the front panel.

A luminaire having an array of light emitting diodes on a circuit board, and a generally planar lens element adjacent each of the LEDs, wherein each lens element has a plurality of concentric ridges projecting from a surface of the lens member to define Fresnel facets for redirecting light emitted from the corresponding LED, providing more uniform light distribution in a compact configuration.

A lighting system utilizing light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and methods for configuring lanterns thereof are disclosed. The lantern includes a roof or canopy that includes fans that span directly between the electronics and LEDs for improved heat dissipation, the fans preferably formed integral with the canopy. The LEDs are mounted on easily mounted and removed modular printed circuit boards, in at least two different sizes and numbers of LEDs, and optical lenses of at least two different lighting patterns are provided, so that the lantern may be assembled or retrofit according to a desired application including candlepower and lighting pattern for cast light. The optical lenses are individually provided, utilize refraction to diminish reflection, and, in one form, incorporate an integral reflector to assist in defining a lighting pattern. In some forms, a securement may be provided for individual securement of lenses with the PCB.

A lens member for projecting light from an LED in a square pattern includes a body formed of a light transmissive material. The body includes a base portion and a bulbous-shaped, light-directing lens portion extending upwardly from the base portion. A recess extending upwardly from a lower surface of the base portion and into the bulbous-shaped, light-directing lens portion continuously tapers from the base to a flat, circular surface below a top surface of the bulbous-shaped, light-directing lens portion. The lens portion has a horizontal cross-sectional shape that is substantially square at elevations between the base and the top surface of the lens portion.
