This invention encompasses novel methods of preparing sulfinamides and sulfoxides, particularly stereomerically pure sulfinamides and sulfoxides. The invention further encompasses novel compounds from which sulfinamides and sulfoxides can be prepared.

Indolocarbazoles are furanosylated (e.g.,) with acetals (e.g.,) or their open chain congeners (e.g.,) under conditions known to promote acetal exchange or formation, such as protic or Lewis acids. Furanosylated indolocarbazoles (e.g.,) are also prepared via ring contraction of pyranosylated indolocarbazoles (e.g.,) under conditions know to effect oxidation and benzylic acid type rearrangements, and pyranosylated indolocarbazoles (e.g.,) are prepared via ring expansion of the furanosylated congeners (e.g.,)

This invention encompasses novel methods of preparing sibutramine and sibutramine derivatives, and stereomerically pure sibutramine derivatives in particular. Examples of sibutramine derivatives include, but are not limited to, sibutramine metabolites such as desmethylsibutramine and didesmethylsibutramine. The invention further encompasses novel compounds useful in the synthesis of sibutramine derivatives.
