A particle vapor reactor (PVR) includes a reactor body with a fluid flow conduit having an inlet end and an outlet end, the crossection of the conduit having a circular geometry at the inlet end, a rectangular geometry at its midsection, and a circular geometry at its outlet end. The PVR conduit defines a saturator section and a condenser section. A compact condensation particle counter (CPC) including the reactor is also disclosed. The CPC also includes a sample inlet, a fluid inlet section, a heater section, and a detector section.

Compact condensation particle counter technology

A particle detector for rapidly detecting and identifying sub 20 nm particles in Ultra Pure Water (UPW) is disclosed. The detector has a nano particle extractor, a nanoparticle collector, and a tracer particle introducer. The extractor limits the size of droplets output to a predetermined size. The extractor includes (1) a liquid sample inlet, (2) a nebulizer connected to the liquid sample inlet (the nebulizer has a gas supply, and an outlet), (3) an impactor arranged to receive material output from the nebulizer, (4) an evaporator connected to the nebulizer and impactor for providing an aerosol at the extractor outlet, and (5) an aerosol connected to the evaporator. The collector us connected to the extractor and has: (1) a collector inlet connected to the aerosol outlet of the extractor, (2) a vapor condensation growth tube connected to the collector inlet, and (3) a repositionable particle capture plate arranged to receive material output from the growth tube at spatially varying positions. The tracer particle introducer is connected to the liquid sample inlet of the extractor. It includes a tracer particle supply connected to a pump which is connected to the extractor. A method for rapid identification of sub&#x2212;20 nm particles in UPW is also disclosed.

Particle detection system and method

A method and system of measuring the size distribution of particles within dilute colloids, for example, through variation of the minimum ice-nucleation sizes of particles within the colloid. The system for measuring particles in fluids includes, a sample fluid inlet and an ice nuclei counter communicatively connected to the sample fluid inlet, the ice nuclei counter cooling the sample fluid and measuring particles which form crystals in the cooled fluid. The method for measuring particles in fluid includes the steps of providing a sample fluid, cooling the sample fluid, and measuring particles which form crystals in the cooled fluid.

A method and system of measuring the size distribution of particles within dilute colloids, for example, through variation of the minimum detected size of aerosolized colloid particles. The method of determining the size distribution of particles in a fluid, involves forming a stream of aerosol droplets of the fluid, the droplets containing particles and dissolved material evaporating the droplets to generate particles, and measuring the concentration of particles by varying a detection threshold. A system or apparatus for determining the size distribution of particles in a fluid, includes a droplet former for forming a stream, of aerosol droplets of the fluid, the droplets containing particles and dissolved material, and a condensation particle detector for evaporating the droplets to generate particles and for measuring the concentration of particles, the condensation particle detector having a variable detection threshold.

Colloid size distribution measurement technology

A system and method for measuring particle mass distributions as a function of particle diameter. The system includes a nebulizer, a particle size classifier and a particle detector. The system may include a dilution module. It may also include a particle mass classifier. The system and method are useful for distinguishing particle populations of similar size and different densities as well as determining the interaction between materials (binding) in mixed colloid systems with varying material ratios. The system and method are also useful for determining particle density in both homogeneous and heterogeneous colloids.

Colloid particle size-mass distribution measurement technology

An aerosol charge conditioner includes a source of ionizing radiation, an ionization region, and a conduit transporting an aerosol sample through the ionization region. The conduit is constructed and arranged to control irradiation of the aerosol sample. The conduit includes an inlet conduit communicatively connected to an outlet conduit. The inlet conduit has a first diameter and a distal end disposed in the ionization region. The outlet conduit has a second diameter which is greater than the first diameter of the inlet conduit and a proximal end disposed in the ionization region. A secondary gas supply is communicatively connected to the ionization region. A method for controlled ionization of aerosol particles using radiation as a source is also disclosed.

A drift tube ion mobility spectrometry sample introduction scheme allows introduction of a sample packet at ground voltages. The sample packet of ionized particles is captured by subjecting particles within a defined region to an electric field at an elevated voltage. The ionized particles in the captured packet then migrate through the drift tube down the voltage gradient according to their electrical mobility. The particles are directed to a high sensitivity detector, such as a condensation particle counter (CPC), for detection.

Drift tube ion mobility spectrometer for aerosol measurement

A method and apparatus for measuring particle concentration and size distribution of particles in liquids. The method involve separating dissolved and particulate residues in liquids for determination of the size and concentration of the particulate species. The method includes the steps of forming an aerosol from the liquid sample to be analyzed, evaporating the droplets in the aerosol to dryness, and detecting the particles. An apparatus for separating dissolved and particulate residues in liquids for determination of the size and concentration of the particulate species is also disclosed. The apparatus includes a droplet former, a dryer communicatively connected to the droplet former, and a detector communicatively connected to the evaporator for detecting particles.

Particle concentration measurement technology

A system for monitoring non-volatile residue concentrations in ultra pure water includes a nebulizer for generating an aerosol composed of multiple water droplets, a heating element changing the aerosol to a suspension of residue particles, and a condensation particle counter to supersaturate the dried aerosol to cause droplet growth through condensation of a liquid onto the particles. The nebulizer incorporates a flow dividing structure that divides exiting waste water into a series of droplets. The droplets are counted to directly indicate a waste water flow rate and indirectly indicate an input flow rate of water supplied to the nebulizer. The condensation particle counter employs water as the condensing medium, avoiding the need for undesirable chemical formulations and enabling use of the ultra pure water itself as the condensing medium.
