A toner dam maintenance process and system model the amount of toner mass at a toner cleaner blade, and apply a corrective procedure, such as insertion of a paperless copy into the print job mid-job or immediately prior to cycle out, to replenish the toner mass at the cleaner blade to maintain lubrication and reduce cleaning failure. The modeling includes contributing factors toward toner dam input and output, including untransferred toner, cycle-in/cycle-out bands, untransferred background, and leakage of toner from the cleaner blade. One or several threshold can be reached to cause one or more different corrective actions to take place. The action may be adding or skipping a pitch to insert a corrective maintenance pattern without transfer.

A printer includes at least one replaceable module which is removable from the printer. A processor discontinues an operation of the printer when the processor determines that an end of life value for the replaceable module is reached unless an appropriate identifier is input which allows the operation of the printer to continue beyond the end of life value. The identifier may be provided by a supplier at the end of life point, provided that an order for a replacement module is received.

A printing apparatus includes a guide member for directing sheets toward a transfer zone. The guide member defines a set of ribs which hold the sheets above the main surface of the guide member. Thus, any stray marking material which lands on the guide member is relatively unlikely to contact a sheet moving over the guide member.

A xerographic cassette for a printing or copying machine includes a photoreceptor drum, a cleaning blade, and a waste toner conveyor for conveying waste toner cleaned off the photoreceptor drum by the cleaning blade into the interior of the photoreceptor drum for storage. The conveyor includes a flexible helical wire which acts as an auger. A curved tube portion of the conveyor passes through an auxiliary waste toner container. Once the auxiliary container is substantially full, waste toner is conveyed into the interior of the photoreceptor drum. The auxiliary container is provided with an aperture which enables it to be emptied, thereby prolonging the useful life of the cassette.

A sheet stripping device for stripping copy sheets from an arcuate imaging surface, including a support element and an electrically conductive stripping element coupled to an electrically biasing source. An electrical bias is applied to the stripping elements or fingers to suppress the build-up of toner on the stripping element so that large concentrations of toner are eliminated and minimal residue is left on the fingers as a thin film for preventing background contamination of the copy sheet.

The transfer station of an electrostatographic apparatus includes a transfer corotron which assists the transfer of a developed image to a copy sheet. The shield of the transfer corotron is allowed to self-bias to a potential controlled by a Zener diode, and this potential is applied to a sheet guide member. Copy paper sheets are fed over a sheet guiding portion of the guide member towards the photoconductor drum, and while the sheets are in contact with the guide member they acquire the potential which is predetermined to ensure optimum transfer conditions.
