A fastener for installation in a workpiece, the fastener comprising a pin and a body comprising a shell and a radially enlarged head, wherein a first engaging means comprising a nylon sleeve is located within a bore of the shell, and a second engaging means comprising a plurality of barbs is located on the exterior of at least part of the pin shank, and wherein the pin shank is insertable into the bore of the body from an end of the body remote from the head end, such that the first and second engaging means mutually engage.

Fastener

An insert for blind installation in a workpiece, and method of manufacture of an insert, the insert () comprising a body () and anchor stud (); wherein the stud is inserted into a through bore () in the body, part of the stud extending beyond the end of the through bore, and a part of the stud provided with opposed areas of knurling () such as threading, being enveloped by a reduced diameter section () of the body, such that crimping the stud onto the body causes material to enter the knurling, thereby firmly attaching body and stud, allowing the insert to withstand high torque.

Blind stud insert

A method and fastener for fastening one or more apertured members () to an apertured workpiece (), an aperture () of the or each member () being aligned with an aperture () in the workpiece (), the method comprising the steps of inserting a fastener () into the aligned apertures, the fastener () being formed of ductile material and having a head (), a shank (), and an axial bore () extending through the shank () and into the head (), the shank () being circumferentially entire and being formed with an external screw-thread () the fastener () being inserted so that the head () engages a face of the one member (), and the shank () extends through the member () or members and into the workpiece (), and at least a part of the screw-thread () is within the workpiece (), and then, while supporting the fastener () at the head (), drawing into and entirely through the bore (), in the direction from the tail portion to the head (), a tapering, enlarged, mandrel head () capable of expanding the bore () and thereby enlarging the bore () evenly throughout its length and causing ductile radial expansion of the shank () sufficient to case the external screw-thread () to embed in the workpiece () and the shank () of the fastener () undergoing ductile axial reduction in length.

Method of fastening

A method of forming a radially expandable externally grooved tubular fastener from metal, comprising the steps of providing a suitable tubular blank () having a tubular wall () and squeezing the tubular wall between an internal member () with a surface which engages the internal tubular wall face () of the blank and a plurality of external members () provided with suitably shaped surfaces engaging the external tubular wall face () of the blank () thereby to form grooves () on the external tubular wall face () of the blank ().

Split die for forming grooved workpiece

A threaded fastener which includes a shank, a radially enlarged head at one end, an external thread on at least a part of the shank, and a bore which extends through the head and into the threaded part of the shank. At least the threaded part of the shank is radially expandable into the threaded engagement with the wall of a suitable unthreaded bore in a workpiece in which the threaded part has been inserted. The fastener thereafter is removable by unscrewing it from the workpiece bore. The expandable part of the shank is provided with a plurality of radially extending lugs or other protrusions provided on the threaded part of the shank thereby to resist unscrewing of the fastener from the workpiece bore.
