The inductor is coupled for receiving a first power signal. A transistor includes a conduction terminal coupled to the inductor to enable current through the inductor. A current from the first power signal is switched to generate a second power signal. A first diode includes an anode coupled to the inductor opposite the cathode of the LED. A controller includes a first terminal coupled to a cathode of the first diode and a second terminal coupled to a control terminal of the transistor. A zener diode is coupled to the first terminal of the controller. A capacitor is coupled between the first diode and inductor. A second diode is coupled to the first diode.

A light-emitting diode lamp includes a light engine, a power assembly, and a heatsink. The light engine includes a plurality of light-emitting diodes, and the power assembly includes a socket disposed at one end of the power assembly and a heat spreader plate disposed at another end of the power assembly opposite the socket. The light engine is mounted to the heat spreader plate. The power assembly further includes a power supply circuit that is electrically coupled to the socket and to the light engine. The socket is configured to electrically couple the power supply circuit to an external electrical source. The heatsink encircles the power assembly and is thermally connected to the light engine. The heatsink also includes a plurality of perforations, which are arranged to facilitate a natural convection airflow over and through the heatsink.

An LED lamp includes a light engine. The light engine includes a substrate including a transparent or translucent thermally conductive material, a plurality of LED semiconductor devices mounted to the substrate, a plurality of conductive traces formed over the substrate to electrically interconnect each of the plurality of LED semiconductor devices, and conductive leads connected to the substrate for supplying electrical energy to the plurality of LED semiconductor devices. The substrate of the light engine may include an aluminum nitride (AlN), or diamond film material. A thermally conductive rod is connected to the light engine. A heatsink is formed by an extrusion or die casting process. The heatsink includes a fin structure for dissipating heat energy into the environment. The thermally conductive rod and the heatsink are thermally connected. An optional optical envelope is mounted to the heatsink. The optional optical envelope is disposed over the light engine.

Method and apparatus for providing an omni-directional lamp having a light emitting diode light engine

A lighting assembly has a light fixture with a light source and heatsink thermally coupled to the light source. The light source has a light engine with light emitting diodes. A lens is mounted to the light fixture over the light source. The lens is a clear or translucent material. A removable trim is mountable to the light fixture. The removable trim has a flange, recessed portion, and mounting rim. The recessed portion has a depth to reduce glare. The removable trim is formed using a stamping or die casting process. The flange has thermally conductive properties. The removable trim is a metal, thermally conductive plastic, or thermally conductive carbon fiber composite material. A screw is used to mount the removable trim to the light fixture. The light fixture and removable trim are mounted to a recessed can housing using a clip or spring.

Method and apparatus for thermally effective removable trim for light fixture

A light emitting diode (LED) light engine includes a substrate for supporting the LED light engine. Conductive traces are formed over the substrate using a thick film screen printing, physical vapor deposition, chemical vapor deposition, electrolytic plating, printed circuit board fabricating, or electroless plating process. The conductive traces include mounting pads. LEDs are mounted to each of the mounting pads for electrical interconnection. The LEDs include red LEDs, green LEDs and blue LEDs. Each of the blue LEDs is at least partially covered with a yellow phosphor coating compound. The concentration of the yellow phosphor coating compound is controlled to allow the emission of blue and yellow spectrum light energy from each blue LED. Emissions of light energy from the red LEDs, green LEDs and blue LEDs are combined to achieve a target correlated color temperature and a target color rendering index for the LED light engine.

An LED light system has an LED light module for inserting into a standard fixture. The fixture has a housing and cover for sealing the enclosure. The LED module contains a shell or outer surface having a matching form factor as the housing for making physical contact with the housing over a sufficient surface area to provide good thermal contact. A substrate is mounted on a support structure. A plurality of LEDs is disposed on the substrate. A heat transfer agent or medium transfers heat from the LEDs to the housing. The outer surface of the LED module spreads the heat over its surface area and firmly contacts the surface of the housing for good thermal transfer. The heat transfer medium is made of a thermally conductive material such as aluminum or copper and formed to contact a surface area of the LED module.

A lighting assembly comprises a light fixture. The light fixture includes a trim formed by a stamping or die casting process. The trim has thermally conductive properties and includes a flange around a perimeter of the trim. The light fixture includes a light source mounted to a central portion of a front surface of the trim, and a heatsink formed by an extrusion or die casting process. The heatsink has thermally conductive properties and is mounted to a back surface of the trim. The light fixture includes an attachment mechanism connected to the light fixture. A recessed can housing mounted to a surface may be provided. The light fixture may be mounted to the recessed can housing by inserting the heatsink into the recessed can housing and engaging the attachment mechanism to an interior portion of the recessed can housing to brace the flange against the surface.

An LED light engine comprising a high thermal conductivity substrate (e.g., a metal-clad PCB), a plurality of light-emitting-diode (LED) semiconductor devices mechanically connected to the substrate, an outer dike fixed to the substrate and surrounding at least a portion of the LED devices, and a substantially transparent polymeric encapsulant (e.g., optical-grade silicone) disposed on the plurality of LED devices and restrained by said outer dike. In one embodiment, the light engine includes a reflector (e.g., a generally conic reflector) fixed to the substrate to form the outer dike. In another embodiment, an optical component (e.g., a lens, filter, or the like) is optically coupled to the polymeric encapsulant disposed on the LED devices.

Methods and apparatus for an LED light engine

An integrated fan pump includes a fan, a pump, and an electrical drive mechanism such as an electric motor configured to simultaneously drive both the fan and pump with respect to the housing. A heat exchanger is preferably connected to the pump and the component to be cooled. In one embodiment, the fan head and the pump head are fixed to a common axle, a single magnet is fixed to the fan head, and the magnetic coil is fixed to the housing. In another embodiment, the fan head and pump head rotate about a fixed axle, the magnetic coil is fixed to said housing, one magnet is fixed to the fan head, and a second magnet is fixed to the pump head.

A heat transfer system is presented for managing thermal transients, thus providing engineers greater flexibility in designing thermal solutions for applications subject to transient heat-generation. A heat reservoir device for managing a heat input subject to transient conditions includes a heat transfer subsystem having a first end and a second end, where the first end is thermally coupled to the heat input; a heat storage subsystem coupled to the second end of the heat transfer subsystem, where the heat storage subsystem comprises a phase change material responsive to the transient conditions. The excess heat load during transient operation is temporarily absorbed by the latent heat of fusion when the phase change material changes its phase from solid to liquid. Subsequently, the absorbed heat can be released back to the ambient via a heat rejection subsystem. This allows engineers to design smaller heat sinks capable of accommodating given transient conditions. This results in heat sinks which are lower cost and smaller size, or which reduce the requirement to provide higher airflow, thereby also decreasing cost and noise, and increasing reliability.
