An improved position determination system and method are described. The method includes determining that a failure to generate an acceptable GNSS position fix has occurred. In response to determining that the failure to generate an acceptable GNSS position fix has occurred, terrestrial positioning information is accessed which is derived from at least one broadcast signal. A second position fix based upon the terrestrial positioning information is generated.

A method for configuring an electronic device comprising: (A) substantially continuously detecting motion of the electronic device using an initiating device disposed within the electronic device, the electronic device further comprising a position determining component, and a wireless communications component; (B) substantially continuously receiving at least one external radio signal by using an initially selected antenna of the position determining component; (C) if reception of at least one external radio signal is not optimized, using the antenna/power supply switch to switch radio signal path between the initially selected antenna and a subsequently selected antenna to optimize the reception of at least one external radio signal; and (D) using the wireless communications component to transmit the current status of the external/internal antenna to the position tracking station.

One embodiment in accordance with the invention can include a controller that can be coupled with a position determining component, and a motion detecting component. In one embodiment, the motion detecting component detects motion of a valuable movable item and generates a signal to the controller indicating the motion. The controller, in response to the signal, causes the position determining component to determine the geographic location of the valuable movable item. A determination is made as to whether the geographic location is within a pre-defined zone. In response to the determination, a command can be generated for controlling the valuable movable item.

The method includes programming a device controller with a location and/or time to define a geo-temporal zone according to the location and/or a window of time, and to select a device function that zone. A device state, which includes the current time and the device position, is then monitored. Upon determining that the device state corresponds with the defined geo-temporal zone, the device is controlled to execute the selected function. The function can relate to selectively enabling or disabling some or all of the device capabilities, power management, and others.

The present invention is a method and system for controlling an electronic device. In one embodiment, a controller is coupled with a position determining component, and a motion detecting component. In one embodiment, the motion detecting component detects motion of the electronic device and generates a signal to the controller indicating the motion. The controller, in response to the signal, causes the position determining component to determine the geographic location of the electronic device. The geographic location is compared with a pre-defined zone and, in response to the comparing, a command is generated for controlling the electronic device.
