Methods and apparatuses for determining surface wetting of a metallic material with changing well fluids. In general, the methods according to the invention include measuring electrical impedance spectroscopy ('EIS') for a system simulating downhole conditions for the wetting of a surface. Methods and apparatuses for making EIS measurements model double-layer capacitance at a downhole surface in a well, from which the nature and quantification of the wetting of the surface can be inferred.

Determining surface wetting of metal with changing well fluids

A method of performing a static gel strength test on a composition can include placing the composition into a static gel strength test instrument, stirring the composition with at least one helical blade of the instrument, and measuring resistance to rotation between a stator and a rotor of the instrument. A static gel strength test instrument can include a rotor, and a stator having at least one helical blade. The static gel strength test instrument characterizes gelation of a composition. Another static gel strength test instrument can include a stator having at least one helical blade, and a rotor having at least one helical blade.

A device for testing the amount of free fluid in a colloid comprises: a first container, wherein the first container has a central axis that spans the length of the first container, wherein the length of the first container is greater than the width and height of the first container, and wherein the central axis of the first container is oriented in a substantially horizontal position during the testing. Methods of using the device include: optically determining the height of free fluid in the container after the period of time has elapsed and using a formula to determine the volume of the free fluid; or removing a plug from a plug tube that is operationally connected to the container; and draining the free fluid from the container into a measurement device.

Determining surface wetting of rock with changing well fluids

A system for measuring one or more physical properties of cementitious material is operable to cure a slurry of cementitious material under desired conditions of temperature and pressure. Particularly, the system may be operable to cure the slurry under a temperature and pressure expected to be experienced downhole. The system may also be used to determine properties of the cured cementitious material, such as maximum yield strength and shear bond strength at the desired temperature and pressure. The desired conditions of temperature and pressure may be applied both during curing and testing of the cementitious material.

In situ testing of mechanical properties of cementitious materials

Disclosed is a fluid testing device which utilizes a small, cross-section fluid interface to separate a test fluid chamber from a drive and measuring chamber. The test fluid chamber contains the test fluid and a paddle-type fluid test assembly. The drive and measuring chamber contains a second fluid and assemblies for moving the paddle and for determining the resistance movement. The two chambers are connected together by a narrow cross-section passageway allowing for continuous testing while test fluids are flowed through the test chamber and for successive testing of different samples without breaking down the device between tests. A pair of coaxial shafts extends between the test fluid chamber and the drive and measuring chamber. The shafts are connected together by a spring located in the drive chamber whereby the resistance to movement is determined by measuring the deflection in the spring. The shafts are magnetically coupled to a motor to rotate the shafts.

Apparatus and methods for continuous compatibility testing of subterranean fluids and their compositions under wellbore conditions

Cement is conditioned, cured and/or tested while applying a specified temperature and/or pressure. In certain embodiments, the specified temperature and/or pressure applied during the testing substantially simulates anticipated static downhole conditions the cement will be subjected to in use. In certain embodiments, the specified temperature and/or pressure applied during the receiving substantially simulates pumping placement conditions the cement will be subjected to in use. In certain embodiments, the cement can be conditioned in a conditioning vessel while applying specified temperature and/or pressure to the cement. In certain embodiments, the temperature and/or pressure applied in the conditioning substantially simulates anticipated pumping placement conditions the cement will be subjected to in use.

Testing mechanical properties

A test cell for testing a sample cement composition includes a test chamber and a variable stress system. The test chamber is configured to hold a sample cement composition for a wellbore. The variable stress system communicates with the test chamber. Performance of the sample cement composition is tested for a wellbore using the variable stress system.

Well completion spacer fluids containing fibers and methods of using the spacer fluids are provided. A method of the invention for displacing a first fluid from a well bore with an incompatible second fluid comprises the following steps. A spacer fluid is placed between the first and second fluids to separate the first and second fluids and to remove the first fluid from the walls of the well bore. Thereafter, the first fluid and the spacer fluid are displaced from the well bore with the second fluid. The spacer fluid comprises water, a weighting material, a dispersing agent, a suspending agent and friction reducer and fibers. The spacer fluid containing the components mentioned above is preferably also foamed.
