A printer driver application is executed to form print data to be output at a peripheral device. User-specific data and the print data are addressed to an address of a queue to be output at the peripheral device. The user data can be an identification of a user requesting the output at the peripheral device, accounting information corresponding to the user, billing information corresponding to the user, a quantity corresponding to the print data, or a cost corresponding to the print data to be output at the peripheral device.

Disclosed are systems and methods for accessing a printing service. In one embodiment, a system and a method pertain to attempting to print to the printing service via an internal network address, and if the attempted printing fails, attempting to print to the printing service via an external network address.

An address is obtained for storing data that is to be output with a peripheral device, as well as information for formatting the data to be compatible for being output by the peripheral device. A data file is written to a storage area at the address that has data that is formatted to be compatible for being output by the peripheral device. If data is detected at address by monitoring thereof, the address of the peripheral device is obtained and data in the data file is sent to the address of the peripheral device to be output

A system for connecting an external device and a host system includes an input/output code element on a host system linked with the external device. The input/output code element generates a device identification string. The device identification string includes an optional feature component associated with the external device. The optional feature component indicates at least one extra feature that is included with a particular external device, such as an envelope feeder for a printer or an audio component for a wireless Internet appliance. The system further includes an installer linked with the host system. The installer receives the device identification string and parses the string for the optional feature component. The installer creates an add-on identifier key in the host system's registry based on the optional feature component. The system further includes a device driver for operating all features of the external device identified by the device identification string, especially the optional feature component. In particular, the device driver accesses the add-on identifier key in the registry. The device driver includes a device driver configuration component which is modified in accordance with each add-on identifier key to include features associated with the optional feature component.

Computer-based system and method for automatic configuration of an external device

A page description language (PDL) is selected for use by a device driver. A PDL is assigned to an application. The assignment of the PDL to the application may then be stored to an index such as a registry or to a file. The device driver is loaded from within the application. The application, from within which the device driver was loaded, is discovered. The application from within which the device driver was loaded may be discovered by examining the host operating environment upon which the application is operating. The PDL assigned to the application is selected for use by the device driver. The PDL assigned to the application may be selected by searching the index to find the PDL assignment for the application and extracting from the assignment the PDL assigned to the application.
