A lens array and a method for fabricating the lens array are described herein. The lens array is made from a photosensitive glass plate containing a relatively small amount of a photosensitive agent (e.g., silver, gold or combination thereof) such that when the photosensitive glass plate is subjected to an exposure step, a heat treatment step and an optional ion exchange step it becomes a glass composite plate that includes glass regions which are lenses and also includes an opaque opal region located around each of the lenses. The lens array has clear, colorless lenses exhibiting greater sag heights than those yellow lenses found in a traditional lens array made from the traditional photosensitive glass plate which was subjected to similar exposure, heat treatment and ion exchange steps.

Lens array and method for fabricating the lens array

A lens array and a method for fabricating a lens array that is relatively flat and has useful lenses with relatively uniform sag heights are described herein. In one embodiment, the lens array includes a one-dimensional array of useful lens and two sacrificial lens each of which is formed next to an end of a row of the useful lenses. In another embodiment, the lens array includes a two-dimensional array of useful lens and a plurality of perimeter sacrificial lens each of which is formed next to an end of a row or a column of the useful lenses. In yet another embodiment, the lens array includes an array of useful lenses and a glass region (including possibly a glass matrix) located within a opal border and outside a opal region that surrounds the useful lenses.

Materials, both glass and glass-ceramic, that exhibit UV-induced changes in light transmission and electrical conductivity behavior. The materials consist essentially, in mole %, of 20-40% SiO , 10-20% AlO , 35-55% SiO &plus;AlO , at least 30% CdF , 0-20% PbF , and/or ZnF , 0-15% rare earth metal fluoride, and 45-65% total metal fluorides.

Method is disclosed for making glass having both polarizing and non-polarizing regions integral thereto by either ion-exchange or by exposure to light and heat. The polarizing regions of the resulting glass is effective in polarizing light radiation, that is, the glass exhibits permanent dichroic behavior and has at least some polarizing effect in the wavelength range of 400 to 700 nm. Colored glasses and method

A photosensitive borosilicate glass which consists essentially in calculated weight percent on an oxide basis of 20-80% SiO.sub.2, 8-40% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-6% Li.sub.2, 0-28% Na.sub.2, 0-25% K.sub.2 O, the total Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O being 10-28%, 0-18% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and minor amounts of photosensitizing agents silver, cerium oxide, antimony oxide and bromine and/or chlorine, the cation ratio of R.sub.2 O--Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 to B.sub.2 O.sub.3 being at least 0.6.

Photosensitive glass

This invention is directed to a method of forming optical devices composed of a photonucleable, crystallizable, lithium silicate glass body having at least one glass lens integral with and rising above at least one surface thereof, the lens being surrounded by a crystallized glass matrix, and optical devices produced by such method. The inventive method comprises subjecting the crystallized body to an ion exchange reaction wherein sodium and/or potassium ions from an external source are exchanged for lithium ions within the surface of the glass lens, the exchange reaction being conducted at a temperature of about 25.degree.-125.degree. C. above the annealing point of the glass for a time sufficient to produce a lens having an axial height in excess of 100% greater than that of lenses produced solely by selectively crystallizing a photonucleable, lithium silicate glass body.

Method for making an optical device

This invention is directed to photosensitively opacifiable glasses consisting essentially, in weight percent, of about 14-18% Na.sub.2 O, 0-6% Zno, 6-12% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-5% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-0.2% Sb.sub.2 O.sub.3, 0-0.1% SnO, 65-72% SiO.sub.2, and 0.007-0.04% Ag, 0.008-0.05% CeO.sub.2, 0.7-1.25% Br, and 1.5-2.5% F as analyzed in the glass, the sum of those components constituting at least 90% of the total composition, which, through an exposure to ultraviolet radiation, followed by a three-step heat treatment, and then a re-exposure to ultraviolet radiation at an elevated temperature, can be converted into a colored opal glass.

Colored photosensitive opal glasses

A method for modifying surface coloration in silver halide-containing photochromic glasses developed by thermal reduction treatments is described, which method comprises subjecting the glass, prior to the coloring thermal reduction treatment, to a silver ion exchange treatment during which silver ions are introduced into at least a portion of the surface of the glass article. Subsequent thermal reduction of the silver-containing surface portion of the glass provides novel colors and/or color patterns therein.

Method of making colored photochromic glasses

This invention is directed to a method for modifying the coloration produced in a silver halide-containing photochromic glass when heat treating the glass at a temperature not exceeding 450.degree. C. under reducing conditions. The method comprises subjecting such a glass having a base composition which contains at least 1% by weight Li.sub.2 O, at least 2% by weight Na.sub.2 O, and at least 6% by weight Li.sub.2 O+Na.sub.2 O+K.sub.2 O to an ion exchange reaction, wherein lithium ions, and potassium ions, when the latter are present in the composition, in the glass surface are exchanged with sodium ions from an external source, prior to the reduction heat treatment.

Colored photochromic glasses and method

The instant invention is concerned with transparent photochromic glass compositions which not only exhibit desirably rapid darkening and fading characteristics, but which also demonstrate the other physical and optical properties required for use in ophthalmic applications. Such glasses utilize the presence of silver chloride and/or silver bromide crystals to impart photochromic behavior in a narrowly-defined composition range within the alkali metal aluminoborosilicate base system. Copper ions are also included in the composition to perform as a sensitizing agent. The glasses have the capability of being either thermally tempered or chemically strengthened to comply with the United States Food and Drug Administration regulations for lenses used in ophthalmic applications. Improved independence of temperature effects upon the photochromic properties can be achieved where the copper level, expressed as CuO, is maintained between about 0.004-0.02% by weight, the chloride value, expressed as Cl, is held between about 0.1-0.25% by weight, the silver content, expressed as Ag, is included between about 0.15-0.3% by weight, and the quantity of bromide, expressed as Br, is varied between about 0.1-0.2% by weight. The fading rate of the glasses is enhanced by maintaining the molar ratio of alkali metal oxides to B.sub.2 O.sub.3 between about 0.55-0.85, the molar ratio of alkali metal oxides minus Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 to B.sub.2 O.sub.3 is about 0.25-0.4, and the weight ratio Ag:(Cl+Br) is about 0.65-0.95.

Photochromic glass

This invention is concerned with the production of composite articles comprising a glass or glass-ceramic matrix containing long fibrous single crystals of rutile (TiO.sub.2) of very high aspect ratios grown in situ. The glass articles are formed via the heat treatment of a molten batch consisting essentially, by weight on the oxide basis, of about 45-65% B.sub.2 O.sub.3, 5-30% Al.sub.2 O.sub.3, 5-30% TiO.sub.2, and 3-30% alkaline earth metal oxides and can exhibit greatly improved mechanical strength and toughness when compared with the original, or fiber-free, glass. The glass-ceramic articles are formed by heat treating the fiber-containing glass in a particular manner to cause the development of fine-grained crystals in situ, resulting in a highly-crystalline article containing long fibrous single crystals of rutile exhibiting verh high aspect ratios.
