The present disclosure addresses methods to refine the geometry of micro features manufactured in various substrates. Such refinement includes improvement in edge roughness and roughness of aperture channel walls. The methods include deposition of material onto feature edges and surfaces as well as placement of micro fabricated inserts into coarse features. Foremost among the candidate technologies that can be employed for these purposes are two photon polymerization-based 3D nano printing and atomic force microscope nanopipette-based electroplating.

Additive manufacturing methods for modification and improvement of the surfaces of micro-scale geometric features

A roller guide wheel contains a single set of spherical bearings and is constructed with a precision outer race machined into the guide wheel interior and an inner race formed by the surfaces of two conically-tapered set screws that affix the roller guide wheel within a housing made part of a stage slider. The roller guide wheel, which contacts a rail on one side of the stage body and exhibits a non-nutating axis of rotation, serves as way for the translating slider. The way on the opposing side of the slider is a set of v-groove contacts that make sliding contact with a rail on the corresponding side of the stage body. A flexure is machined into the slider permitting preload of the slider contacts points with the rails. The stage geometry permits a large slider through-hole and the use of alternative way mechanisms with the roller guide wheel.

Precision single-bearing set roller guide wheel and low profile positioning stages using the same

The disclosed device comprises a manually-actuated micro positioning stage that incorporates a mechanism for measurement and electronic output of the stage slider position. A Hall Effect sensor device is used to sense rotary position of the lead screw. based on the lead screw pitch. Processor means converts the Hall Effect sensor measurement of the lead screw rotational displacement into linear displacement of the stage slider for presentation on an electronic display. A magnetically-permeable cap contains a small disc magnet that is poled diametrically and is affixed to the end of the lead screw that is in contact with the stage slider by means of a sensor housing. The Hall Effect sensor contained in a surface mount electronic package is enclosed in a sensor housing that is part of the stage slider that is in contact with the lead screw and is positioned coaxially with the lead screw.

Compositions and methods to treat biofilms are disclosed based on the discovery of the role of the disaccharide trehalose in microbial biofilm development. In various embodiments to treat body-borne biofilms systemically and locally, the method includes administering trehalase, the enzyme which degrades trehalose, in combination with other saccharidases for an exposition time sufficient to adequately degrade the biofilm gel matrix at the site of the biofilm. The method also includes administering a combination of other enzymes such as proteolytic, fibrinolytic, and lipolytic enzymes to break down proteins and lipids present in the biofilm, and administering antimicrobials for the specific type(s) of infectious pathogen(s) underlying the biofilm. Additionally, methods are disclosed to address degradation of biofilms on medical device surfaces and biofilms present in industrial settings.

Compositions and methods to prevent and treat biofilms

A fruit and vegetable coring system comprises a cylinder exhibiting a cutting edge on one end and attachment to a handle at the other end. This cylindrical blade is used to make a cylindrical incision about the core of a fruit (or vegetable) and slice through the entire depth of the fruit (or vegetable). A planar blade(s) is made part of the interior of the cylinder in the proximity of the cylindrical blade for the purpose of shearing the fruit core and freeing it from the fruit upon rotation of the cylinder. The change in the inner diameter of the cylinder due to the interior taper of the cylinder associated with the blade is disclosed to be sufficient to compress the fruit core and thereby retain it in the cylinder for removal from the fruit.

The device is a precision motion right angle drive for use with linear and rotary stages which employs a combination of globoid worm and small diameter star gear. Coaxial with the star gear, on the same shaft, is a spur gear which drives the rotary stage gear or a linear rack. The thin star gear achieves meshing accuracy with the globoid worm permitting a large tooth angle for direct preloading without jamming. This gear combination eliminates backlash, allows a low gear ratio for low globoid worm speed, and enables the use of an ordinary spur gear to engage the stage gear without backdrive or backlash. Further, it allows for gear contact area to compensate for the thinness of the star gear. An embodiment including an integrated bearing rotary stage permits flexibility of application and avoidance of need for custom bearing designs by achieving high motion precision at low cost.

A flexible, body attached device is disclosed for dispensing skin treatment and topically-absorbed medicinal treatments. The device comprises a dispensing reservoir that is caused to dispense treatment through a slit-based diaphragm valve upon the application of simple pressure to the device. Various embodiments of the invention include variations in the structure of the valve, reservoir, and body attachment.

A portable, extremity-attachable device for dispensing skin treatment comprises a deformable housing having a skin treatment reservoir that is caused to dispense such treatment upon squeeze actuation. A set of valves permit proper operation of the device with different modes of use. Embodiments include a simple deformable, wrist-mounted device and a pumped based device with a rigid housing.

Portable device for dispensing skin treatments

A system and method for efficiently and effectively simulating hardware-in-the-loop testing of a wireless communications network. The system and method employs an optical matrix-vector multiplier (MVM) for performing optical signal processing to simulate radio frequency (RF) signal propagation characteristics in a mobile wireless communications network. Specifically, the system and method employs an optical modulator, which is adapted to modulate optical energy with signal energy, such as radio frequency (RF) signal energy, propagating from a first group of transceivers of the network to form a vector of optical signals. The optical matrix-vector multiplier (MVM) receives the vector of optical signals, and has a matrix of optical channel weights which are modifiable in accordance with desired parameters to represent at least on parameter of the wireless network. The optical MVM is further adapted to output signals based on the received vector of optical signals and the optical channel weights. The system and method further employs a detector device, adapted to detect the output signals and to provide the output signals as an output vector of signals to a second group of transceivers of the network.

System and method for providing simulated hardware-in-the-loop testing of wireless communications networks

Disclosed is an apparatus and method for improving the detection of signals obscured by either correlated Gaussian or non-Gaussian noise plus additive white noise. Estimates from multichannel data of model parameters that describe the noise disturbance correlation are obtained from data that contain signal-free data vectors, referred to as &ldquo;secondary&rdquo; or &ldquo;reference&rdquo; cell data. These parameters form the coefficients of a multichannel whitening filter. A data vector to be tested for the presence of a signal passes through the multichannel whitening filter. The filter output is then processed to form a test statistic. The test statistic is compared to a threshold value to decide whether a signal is &ldquo;present&rdquo; or &ldquo;absent.&rdquo; The method is effective in detecting targets without knowledge of the non-Gaussian noise statistics.
