Authentication systems and related methods are described which enable consumers to conveniently determine whether an article is an authentic or legitimate article, as opposed to a counterfeit or imitation article. The systems and methods utilize electronic tags incorporated into the article and/or its packaging, and appropriately configured mobile devices such as a smart phone.

Consumer authentication systems and methods

A method and apparatus are provided for die cutting label stock comprising a facestock, an adhesive and optionally a liner to form labels where a liner of the linered pressure sensitive adhesive label stock may be a thin or ultrathin liner.

Apparatus and process for cutting adhesive labels

An RFID webstock containing a relatively high pitch-density array of semiconductive chips is provided and joined to a web bearing relatively widely spaced antennas in a continuous process. The RFID webstock is separated or cut into individual chip sections, with the spacing of the chips being increased as the RFID webstock is die cut. The individual chips on the sections are then joined to corresponding antennas to form an RFID inlay stock. This process is conducive to high speed roll-to-roll production of RFID tag and label roll stock.

RFID label technique

An apparatus and method for removing matrix material from a web of cut adhesive backed labels. A matrix stripping apparatus comprises a rotating cylinder for receiving a web of cut adhesive labels, a source for applying an electrostatic charge to the web of cut adhesive labels, and a separation member to facilitate separation of the matrix from a web comprising cut labels and a release liner. Applying an electrostatic charge to the web assists in holding the web against the rotating cylinder and relieves tension in the separation and removal of the matrix material.

System and method for label matrix stripping

A process for preparing embossed, finely-divided, thin, bright-metal particles which process comprises forming an embossed release surface to al least one side of a carrier sheet, depositing a metal film onto the release surface so that the metal film conforms to the embossed surface, solubilizing the release surface, removing the metal film from the carrier sheet, and breaking the thin metal film onto embossed particles having an average diameter of between 10 to 50 microns. The film may also take the form of an optical stack.

Process for making machine readable images

Finely divided embossed metal particles are prepared by forming an embossment on a carrier surface in which the embossment comprises a machine readable image produced by a diffraction grating pattern, a holographic image pattern or an image visible solely by optical magnification. A layer of metal is applied to the surface so the layer adopts the complement or the embossment. The layer is then separated from the surface and reduced to embossed particles. Alternatively, the embossment can be formed on the carrier sheet directly or on the outer surface of a release coating formed on the carrier sheet. When removing the film of metal from the release-coated carrier, the carrier sheet with the release coating and film of metal can be passed through a release environment which causes the release coating to separate the film and carrier, but which is nondestructive of the metal. The metal particles can be collected in a solvent which is nonreactive with the metal, and the metal particles can be broken further into pigment particles. The diffraction grating can have from about 5,000 to about 11,000 grooves per cm.

Embossed metallic leafing pigments

A method of identifying an object by a machine readable image applied to it in which the image is produced by a plurality of fine particles embossed with a machine readable pattern produced by replicating contact with a diffraction grating having from about 5,000 to about 11,000 grooves per cm.

Embossed, finely-divided, thin, bright-metal particles are prepared by forming an embossed release surface on at least one side of a carrier sheet in which the embossed pattern comprises a diffraction grating having from about 5,000 to 11,000 grooves per cm. A metal film is deposited on the release surface so that the metal film conforms to the embossed surface. The carrier sheet is passed with the release surface and the metal film through a release environment which causes the release surface to separate from the metal film. The metal film is removed from the release surface in a particulate form to produce metal particles substantially free of the release surface. The particles are collected in a solvent which is non-reactive with the metal. The metal particles are then broken into pigment particles having an average diameter between about 10 to about 50 microns. The film may also take the form of an optical stack.

Process for making embossed metallic leafing pigments

A method for decoration of paper or plastic sheeting and other substrates, involving a novel technique for coating and embossing the substrate. The paper or plastic sheeting is supplied with a coating of thermosensitive material, as by extrusion. The coated sheet is heated to adequately soften the coating, such as by use of a heated cylinder, and remote heat sources such as infrared heaters. The softened sheet surface is then decorated using an embossing member, to provide a diffraction pattern or hologram. Use of an embossment pattern of lesser depth than the surface roughness of the sheet before embossing provides attractive decorative patterns.
