A disc brake for a vehicle such as a commercial vehicle, wherein the brake rotor extends from a hub end of an axle inboard a sufficient distance to place the friction surface of the rotor and the brake caliper outside the envelope of a wheel mounted at the end of the axle. The placement of the rotor friction surface and the caliper outside the envelope of the wheel enhances brake cooling, makes the brake more readily accessible for inspection and maintenance without significant vehicle disassembly, and permits the rotor outer diameter to be extended beyond the diameter of the wheel rim, thereby lowering brake components stresses and permitting use of lighter, lower cost brake components.

A rotor having a disc and a hub assembly, in which the disc may be easily removed from the hub. The assembly has driving pins to connect the disc with the hub. The driving pins take up the tolerance between the disc and hub connection and absorb the torque applied to the rotor, preventing stress and therefore fatigue on the disc and hub.

An adapter plate for a caliper disc brake assembly is attached to the inboard side of the axle flange of a vehicle axle housing. The adapter plate is generally C-shaped to allow mounting around the central region of the axle housing. The inboard positioning of the adapter plate allows mounting of larger brake calipers within a confined space. The caliper is connected to the axle housing by the adapter plate for the purpose of positioning the caliper relative to the rotor and resisting the torque developed by the action of the brake pads on the rotor. In order to adjust the lateral position of the caliper, the adapter plate, in one embodiment, has a pilot surface which allows the axle flange to be recessed within the adapter plate. In another embodiment, a secondary adapter plate bridges over the opening in the adapter plate to allow mounting of the adapter assembly to the entire bolt circle of the axle flange.

A desiccant cartridge for an air dryer of the type used for compressed air supply systems. The desiccant cartridge incorporates an internally disposed particulate filter element which functions to provide particulate filtration for air coming into the desiccant cartridge. The filter element further acts to apply a compressive loading against internal components within the desiccant cartridge insuring that these parts are firmly coupled and providing sealing engagement between components despite manufacturing tolerance variations in the component parts.

A desiccant type air dryer assembly having an integral purge volume with a body assembly and a removable desiccant cartridge. A retention bolt is provided in the body assembly which serves the two-fold function of retaining the cartridge and body assembly in an assembled condition as well as providing a flow passageway for air moving through the air dryer.

A clutch drive for a vehicle engine cooling fan includes a pulley portion which is driven by the vehicle engine, a fan plate which rotatably mounts the engine cooling fan, and a pressure plate which engages the fan plate to drive the latter when the clutch is engaged. Torque transmission from the pulley to the pressure plate is through a series of circumferentially spaced coiled springs which also yieldabel urge the pressure plate into driving engagement with the fan plate. A spring stabilizer defines a circumferentially extending cavity which receives several coils of the spring to stabilize the latter and to prevent displacement of the coils circumferentially with respect to each other during engagement and disengagement of the clutch. The stabilizer also slidably engages both the pressure plate and the pulley, thereby taking up clearances between the various members to prevent rattling and also to assist in the transmission of torque to the pressure plate.

Fan clutch

A clutch assembly includes an input member, an output member, and clutch plates connected to the input and output members which are driven into drive engagement with one another when the clutch is engaged to connect the output member for rotation with the input member. The clutch plates carried on the input member are mounted on a separate clutch plate carrying member, which is machined before installation on the input member to thereby facilitate manufacture and assembly of the device. A fluid pressure responsive piston operates the clutch plates, and has an outer diameter slidingly and sealingly engaged with the wall to bore of the housing of the input or driving member, and its inner diameter slidingly engaged with an annular retainer which is mounted for rotation with the input member. A pair of roller bearings mount the input or driving member on a fixed spindle and on the output member, and bypass passages are provided around the bearings to assure that fluid pressure can be relieved from oil seals sealing the bore and the bearings within the housing defined by the input or driving member.
