A conditioner composition for a printing plate with metallic non-print areas on the printing surface contains a polymeric or oligomeric component. The polymeric component adheres to the metal (particularly, aluminum) surface of the non-print area(s) of the printing member, and has a hydrophilic portion. The conditioned printing plate is particularly useful for printing single fluid inks having an emulsified hydrophilic fluid phase.

Lithographic printing method and materials

A single fluid lithographic printing ink composition includes a hydrophobic phase and a hydrophilic fluid phase. The hydrophilic fluid phase contains water or a liquid polyol or both. The hydrophobic phase contains a hydrogen bonding vinyl polymer that can hydrogen bond with the hydrophilic fluid phase. The vinyl polymers are preferably branched, but remain soluble in the hydrophobic phase. The invention provides stable inks that can be used as single fluid inks with excellent fountain stability and resistance to toning.

The present invention provides compositions of and methods employing printing inks employing novel vinyl resins that are prepared using polyfunctional monomers, wherein the vinyl resins have low number average molecular weights and broad polydispersities. The printing inks of the invention have unexpectedly reduced misting and slinging in high speed press operations.

Protective and decorative coatings for metal are prepared using aqueous polymer compositions consisting essentially of a thermosetting vinyl or acrylic polymer which has been polymerized in the presence of a preformed, crosslinked, elastomeric copolymer. The rate at which the monomers of the thermosetting polymer are added to the reaction mixture is substantially equal to the rate of reaction of these monomers to form the thermosetting polymer. This is believed to result in the formation of minute emulsified particles containing a core of the elastomeric copolymer surrounded by a layer of the thermosetting polymer. The thermosetting polymer contains pendant hydroxyl groups and a latent, heat-activated crosslinking agent.
