Processes for utilizing various emulsion polymerization procedures for preparing aqueous nanocomposite dispersions are disclosed. The disclosed processes include both in-situ polymerizations in the presence of at least partially exfoliated, lightly modified clays as well as admixtures of polymer dispersions with at least partially exfoliated, lightly modified clay dispersions. The disclosed nanocomposite dispersions are useful for preparing a variety of materials, such as coatings, adhesives, caulks, sealants, plastics additives, and thermoplastic resins. Processes for preparing polymer nanocomposite powders and use of these powders as plastic resin and plastics additives are also disclosed.

Emulsion polymerization methods involving lightly modified clay and compositions comprising same

Colorants, dispersants, and dispersions are provided which include PNPs having a mean diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers, an acid value in the range of from 0 to 700 mg KOH/g PNP solids, an amine value in the range of from 0 to 250, a hydroxyl number in the range of from 0 to 250 mg KOH/g PNP solids, and containing at least 2 wt % of a polarizable group. Also provided are methods for preparing colorants, dispersants, and dispersions, which include PNPs.

Colorants, dispersants and dispersions containing polymeric nanoparticles

Aqueous nanocomposite dispersions: processes, compositions, and uses thereof

New aqueous PNP dispersions are disclosed. A method of preparing an aqueous PNP dispersion from solvent-based PNPs having a diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers is disclosed. An associative thickener composition based on PNPs having an average of at least two phobes extending from the surface of said PNPs is also disclosed. The aqueous PNP dispersions are useful in aqueous-based industrial and consumer products, such as latex paint.

Aqueous nanoparticle dispersions

Composite compositions that include polymeric nanoparticles and clay nanoparticles, and a method for forming the compositions are provided. The polymeric nanoparticles of particular compositions have a mean diameter from 1 to 50 nm. Also provided are polymeric compositions including the composite compositions and a method for forming them.

Composite compositions including polymeric nanoparticles and clay nanoparticles

The present invention is directed, in part, to improved nanocomposite compositions and processes for preparing same. Specifically, in one embodiment, there is provided a process for preparing an aqueous nanocomposite dispersion, wherein the process comprises: polymerizing via suspension polymerization a suspension comprising at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a hydrophobically modified clay to form the nanocomposite dispersion after polymerization, wherein the hydrophobically modified clay is dispersed in the monomer. Other embodiments include processes for preparing aqueous nanocomposite particles, colloids, and dispersions using hydrophobically modified clays in aqueous systems and compositions comprising same.

Colorant, dispersants, dispersions, and inks are provided which include crosslinked polymeric nanoparticles (hereafter 'PNPs') having a mean diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers, the PNPs including as polymerized units at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer. Processes for modifying the surface chemistry of a clay are disclosed. In one embodiment, there is provided a process for modifying the surface chemistry of a clay, wherein the process comprises: providing a clay dispersion comprising at least one unmodified clay wherein said clay has a first exchangeable cation; adding a second cation to the clay dispersion, wherein at least a portion of the second cation exchanges with at least a portion of the first cation to form a modified clay dispersion; and combining at least one polar containing agent with the modified clay dispersion to provide a modified clay.

Modified clays and methods for making and using same

An aqueous polymeric composition containing select polymeric nanoparticles is provided. The select polymeric nanoparticles contain as polymerized units at least one multiethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one water soluble monomer; and have a mean diameter in the range of from 1 to 50 nanometers. Also provided are aqueous polymeric compositions that further contain second particles such as pigment particles or second polymer particles. The aqueous polymeric composition is useful for preparing coatings having at least one improved property compared to a coating absent the select polymeric nanoparticles. Further, the aqueous polymeric composition is useful for treating wood. A coating prepared from the aqueous polymeric composition is also provided.

Aqueous polymeric composition containing polymeric nanoparticles and treatments prepared therefrom

An aqueous composition including an aqueous dispersion of polymeric nanoparticles having a mean diameter of from 1 to 50 nanometers, the particles including, as polymerized units, at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer and at least one ethylenically unsaturated water soluble monomer is discloseded. Certain embodiments of the composition include pigment particles and other polymer particles. The aqueous compositions include aqueous coating compositions.

Aqueous composition containing polymeric nanoparticles

Provided are improved coatings, polymeric dispersions, and polymeric composites, which include crosslinked polymeric nanoparticles (hereafter 'PNPs'). Also provided are methods for forming improved coatings, polymeric dispersions, and polymeric composites, which include PNPs. The PNPs have polymerized units of at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer have a mean diameter of from 1 to 50 nanometers. PNPs having polymerized units of at least one multi-ethylenically-unsaturated monomer and at least one surface-active monomer are also provided.

The present invention is directed, in part, to improved nanocomposite compositions and processes for preparing same. In one embodiment, there is provided a process for preparing an aqueous nanocomposite dispersion, wherein the process comprises: providing at least one first ethylenically unsaturated monomer; providing an aqueous clay dispersion comprising an at least partially exfoliated aqueous clay having a first exchangeable cation and, optionally, at least one second ethylenically unsaturated monomer; adding a second cation to said aqueous clay dispersion, wherein at least a portion of the second cation exchanges with at least a portion of the first cation to form a modified aqueous clay dispersion; combining the first ethylenically unsaturated monomer and the modified aqueous clay dispersion; and polymerizing at least a portion of the first or second monomer to form the aqueous nanocomposite dispersion wherein at least one of the first or the second monomers comprises a polar monomer.
