Disclosed is a process for controlling the level of in-process monomer in an emulsion polymerization reaction. Also disclosed is a method of controlling particle size by controlling the level of in-process monomer.

Polymer process

This invention relates to a process for preparing polymers which contain as polymerized units hydrophobic monomers wherein a stable emulsion is formed and the formation of suspension particles is minimized. The process includes making a concentrated monomer emulsion, diluting the concentrated monomer emulsion with water, feeding the diluted monomer emulsion to a reactor, and polymerizing the monomer.

Process for preparing polymers

Low viscosity, fast curing binders for nonwoven cellulosic materials comprise an aqueous dispersion of discrete particles of a highly functionalized emulsion copolymer resulting from the copolymerization of a water insoluble olefinic non-ionic organic compound, a water soluble olefinic carboxylate compound and a water soluble olefinic hydroxy ester or a water soluble olefinic amide or a mixture of hydroxy ester and amide. The emulsion copolymer dispersion is admixed with a latex to provide a binder having a relatively low viscosity and capable of reaching about 80 percent of fully cured wet tensile strength in 8 seconds or less.

Non-formaldehyde emitting binders for nonwoven cellulosic materials comprise a solution copolymer of an olefinically unsaturated organic compound having at least one carboxylate group, which is reacted with a primary or secondary amide of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The product of said reaction is admixed with a non-formaldehyde containing latex carrier which has been formulated with a non-formaldehyde forming reactive monomer to produce binder compositions which reach substantially fully cured wet strength in 8 seconds or less.

Fast curing binder for cellulose

Non-formaldehyde emitting binders for nonwoven cellulosic materials comprise a solution copolymer of an olefinically unsaturated organic compound having at least one carboxylate group conjugated with the olefinic linkage, which is reacted with a hydroxyalkyl ester of an olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid. The product of said reaction is admixed with a non-formaldehyde containing latex carrier to produce a binder composition which will reach substantially fully cured wet strength in 8 seconds or less.

Fast cure, zero formaldehyde binder for cellulose

A non-polymerizable polycarboxylate imparts greater wet strength to nonwovens bound by an emulsion polymer containing a polymerizable cross-linker.
