An apparatus is provided for applying adhesive labels, that are initially coupled together end-to-end in a label strip that has a non-adhesive backing material, onto a product. The apparatus has a frame with a supply container mounted thereto for containing a supply of the labels. A plurality of guide rollers is provided for guiding the strip of labels through the apparatus. A label sensor is mounted to the frame for detecting when an individual label has been moved past the label sensor. The frame further has mounted thereto an applicator head equipped with a stripper plate for removing the backing material from the label strip, which is thereafter wound onto a take-up container. The label strip and the removed backing material are moved with a supply motor that is mounted to the frame. The applicator head further has an applicator motor for rotating a break-away roller. Mounted directly beneath the break-away roller is an idler roller that cooperates with the break-away roller to hold a separated label in position. A product sensor is provided to detect a product needing to be labeled by the applicator head. Further a process is provided for separating an individual label from a series of labels and for applying the label to a product. The first step of the process involves detecting the presence of a product needing a label. Next, a first motor on the apparatus is activated to feed a label, held between a break-away roller and an idler roller, onto the product. A second motor is activated simultaneously with the first motor to feed a forward-most label from a strip of labels into the area vacated by the previous label. A backing strip is then peeled from the strip of labels as the forward-most label is fed forwardly by the second motor, thus exposing an adhesive material on the back of the strip of labels. The process further involves monitoring the label strip being advanced and determining when one complete label has been advanced. Next, when one complete label has been advanced, the first and second motors are deactivated, and a brake is applied to the label which immediately precedes the forward-most label, and the first motor is reactivated to separate the forward-most label from the remaining strip of labels.

A method and apparatus are provided for continuously supplying product to a machine for intermittently performing work on at least one product. The apparatus comprises a loading conveyor, a continuous drive motor operably coupled to the loading conveyor for moving the loading conveyor at a substantially constant loading speed, a transfer conveyor positioned adjacent the loading conveyor and adapted to receive product therefrom, a low speed drive for moving the transfer conveyor at a predetermined low speed to receive product from the loading conveyor, a high speed drive for moving the transfer conveyor at a high second speed relatively greater than the low speed to the machine, and a controller for operating the low speed and high speed drives in sequence so that the low speed drive is activated to receive product from the loading conveyor at low speed, and the high speed drive is activated to transfer the product to the machine at high speed.

A sheet placer for use in conjunction with a packaging machine to minimize space along the machine for moving sheets from a supply in a magazine to receptacles moved by the machine. The placer has vertically oriented magazines and suction cup assemblies which move on a vertical path of travel between sheet pick up positions and sheet releasing positions. The assemblies are carried by a block mounted on a vertical track and operated by an air motor. A cam and follower mechanism moves a slide horizontally to cause a rack and pinion arrangement to reverse by the orientation of the vacuum cup assemblies during each up or down movement of the assemblies by the air motor.

Method of and apparatus for packaging product in a bag of flexible packaging material wherein a bag is sleeved on an open-ended carrier from one end thereof at a first station, product is loaded in the carrier from its other end, the bag and product lengths being such that the bag has a lip all around it at its mouth projecting beyond the product, the carrier is moved to a second station, a closure panel is inserted in the carrier through its said other end at the second station, the product and panel are pushed out of the carrier through its said one end, the bag coming off the carrier surrounding the product, and the bag with the product and panel therein are moved to a number of lip folding and sealing stations for folding over and sealing of the lip to said panel.

Packaging method and apparatus

Method of and apparatus for wrapping reams of paper or the like in which the ream being wrapped is placed on an elevator mechanism at a lower level and raised by the elevator mechanism to an upper level. The elevator mechanism comprises a central support and two outboard supports extending endwise of the ream. The outboard supports are movable inwardly from an outer position wherein they are spaced outwardly from the central support. The outboard supports occupy their outer position as the ream is placed on the supports and while the ream is being raised. As the ream is raised, it engages a wrapper sheet and portions of the wrapper sheet fold down on the sides of the ream. When the ream is raised, underfolders move in under the ream from opposite sides of the ream to fold portions of the sheet in under the bottom of the ream. The outboard supports move inwardly toward the central support to clear the way for the underfolders to move in, and are then returned to the lower level and moved out to their outboard position. The central support is moved down to the lower level and the underfolders move into the region vacated by the central support. The ream is then pushed off the underfolders and the latter are retracted. As the ream is pushed forward, the ends of the wrapper sheet are tucked in on the ends of the ream by moving a pair of rearward tuckers forward from a retracted position and by moving the ream past a pair of fixed forward tuckers. The rearward tuckers are moved outwardly away from the ends of the ream as they return to retracted position to a position clear of the next ream being raised.

Method of an apparatus for applying a telescoping lid to an open top, filled box or case in which the lid is formed from a flat blank around the case, in which the lid is pressed down on the contents of the case, in which the major flaps of the lid are pressed in against the sides of the case between a ram and a previously lidded case, and in which the minor flaps are pressed in against the ends of the case so as to square up the lid on the case prior to the flaps being secured together. The apparatus includes tucking units for folding the outer end portions of the major flaps of the lid in on the case along vertical fold lines with the tucking units being driven by upward movement of the case being lidded.
