Signal processing circuit for a multi-pixel scanner array is calibrated by establishing gain and offset correction factors from selected scanner signal measurements and known gain/offset settings that provide accurate calibration of the processing circuit on a pixel-by-pixel basis without concern for variations of component and response values within the signal processing circuit itself from nominal values. When used as a film scanner apparatus, measurements of signal responses taken at open gate conditions are compensated by adjusting exposure values for imager operation during film scanning to make the minimum response output of the apparatus for film D.sub.min equal to the minimum derived of open gate condition during the calibration process.

A method of operating a photographic printer to provide for automatic setup for a plurality of film types and conditions in which film term data for film types encountered by the printer is automatically created and periodically updated to reflect current experience using accumulated historical density data derived from scanning of film strips and in which exposure of image frames from a current film strip to a photosensitive medium is adjusted either by average density information stored for one or more film types from the historical data or by average density information derived from the current film strip with determination of which average density information to use being made automatically by comparison of either or both of film type or average minimum density information of the film strip with the corresponding stored information. Automatic adjustment of tungsten illumination exposure and automatic updating of slope compensation factors for under- and over-exposed negatives are also described.

Automatic setup of photographic printer

An apparatus and method for printing a color image from a photographic transparency onto a photosensitive medium is claimed. A plurality of light sources each provide light of a different color when energized. The different color light of each light source has a light intensity level established by an energizing level applied thereto. A light integrator combines the different colored light from the light sources to produce light of a composite color along a primary optical path. The photographic transparency is disposed along the primary optical path such that the composite color light passes through the photographic transparency and produces a projection of the color image from the photographic transparency. An electronic imager is provided for imaging the projected color image of the photographic transparency. A device is provided for exposing the photosensitive medium with the projected color image. A power supply is provided for energizing the plurality of light sources. The power supply provides a first plurality of predetermined energizing levels to the plurality of light sources respectively to produce a first composite color light that substantially compensates for the sensitivity response of the electronic imager. Alternately, the power supply provides a second plurality of predetermined energizing levels to the plurality of light sources respectively to produce a second composite color light that substantially compensates for the sensitivity response of the photosensitive medium.

Color image reproduction with compensating light source

A rotatable disc is provided, for use in a photographic printer, supporting both scanning and large area transmissive filters. The disc is used to selective position a scanning or large area filter between a photographic negative and a single light sensor. The disc thus permits the single light sensor to be used to measure both the scanned and large area transmissive characteristics of the photographic negative.

Filter apparatus use in a photographic printer

A photographic printer is provided including reflection densitometry apparatus for measuring the reflective density of a reflective patch or print. The apparatus includes a carrier separable from the printer for supporting a plurality of reflective patches. A light sensor is disposed on the printer, and means are disposed on the printer for supporting the carrier with a selected one of the reflective patches opposing the light sensor. Means are provided for illuminating the reflective patch, and means are provided for focusing the light reflected off of the reflective patch onto the light sensor. Further provided are means for selectively positioning at least one transmissive filter between the selected reflective patch and the light sensor.
