The subject matter of this specification can be implemented in, among other things, a computer-implemented method that includes identifying metadata related to television programming being presented on a display device. The method further includes extracting one or more keywords from the metadata. The method further includes generating multiple search suggestions based on the keywords and first search results based on one or more of the search suggestions. The method further includes presenting the search suggestions and the first search results together on the display device.

Television related searching

In accordance with a method for presenting home screen shortcuts, a computer system is coupled to a plurality of media content providers and obtains a respective media application for each of the media content providers. Content is provided for display on the television screen from a first media content provider via a first media application. The computer system obtains a plurality of shortcuts corresponding to a home screen user interface, and the plurality of shortcuts includes one or more media shortcuts and a search shortcut. The home screen user interface is displayed concurrently with the provided content on the television screen, and the one or more media shortcuts and the search shortcut are concurrently displayed on the home screen user interface. In response to selection of the search shortcut, the computer system initiates a shortcut search for one or more additional shortcuts for display on the home screen user interface.

A system and method for surfacing tailored actionable items associated with applications in a user experience of a mobile computing device is disclosed. The method includes determining an event associated with a application, determining an action library including a plurality of actionable items, identifying, from the action library, one or more actionable items associated with one or more applications based on the event, generating an action menu based on the one or more actionable items, the action menu including a deep link to perform the one or more actionable items, and presenting the action menu in association with the application in response to the event.

A method for presenting home screen shortcuts is disclosed. The method includes receiving a selection of shortcuts to a plurality of applications of at least two different types available for execution on a television device and presenting those shortcuts on a home screen user interface displayed on a TV screen or a second screen device. The method also includes responding to a user selection of one of the shortcuts by causing execution of the application associated with the shortcut, including in response to selection of the TV channel shortcut, executing a set of actions are executed in association with the selected TV channel shortcut. The set of actions at least includes a first action to launch a TV player application associated with the TV channel shortcut and a second action of tuning to the TV channel corresponding to the TV channel shortcut.
