Methods and systems for displaying an image on a display device having first and second light sources are provided. A video signal is provided to the display device. The video signal includes first and second video frames. Each video frame includes first and second sub-frames corresponding to the respective first and second light sources. The first light source is operated for a first duration during the first sub-frame of the first video frame. The first light source is operated for a second duration during the first sub-frame of the second video frame. The second duration is different from the first duration.

Method and system for improving dimming performance in a field sequential color display device

A backlight system for a liquid crystal display includes a substantially planar, refractive waveguide having a first major face and a second major face opposite the first major face. The waveguide includes a viewable region corresponding to a viewable area of the liquid crystal display. The system further includes a light source positioned proximate to the second major face and within the viewing region for producing light. An injection feature is proximate to one or more of the second major face and the first major face and within the viewing region to optically couple the light into the waveguide such that the light becomes waveguided light. A plurality of extraction features is proximate to one or more of the second major face and the first major face and within the viewing region to optically couple the waveguided light out of the waveguide.

Backlight systems for liquid crystal displays

Methods and systems for displaying an image on a display device having first and second light sources are provided. A video signal is provided to the display device. The video signal includes a plurality of frames, and each frame includes first and second sub-frames corresponding to the respective first and second light sources. The first light source is operated for a first duration during the first sub-frame of each of the plurality of frames. The second light source is operated for a second duration during the second sub-frame of each of the plurality of frames. The second duration is different than the first duration.

Method and systems for improving performance in a field sequential color display

A light source incorporatesphosphor-light emitting diodes (LEDs). The LEDs may be raised off the floor of the optical cavity to permit light to be emitted from the base of the LED. Additionally, a reflective protrusion may be placed beneath the raised LED to aid in redirecting light forward. The LEDs may be skewed in relation to adjacent LEDs to reduce interference. Non-white LEDs may be incorporated into the light source to permit for selective color tuning. Fluorescent lamps may also be implemented in combination with the LEDs to form a hybrid light source.The light source may be used as a backlight for a liquid crystal display assembly.

Light source with non-white and phosphor-based white LED devices, and LCD assembly

Apparatus are provided for driving an LED light source and controlling a light output of the light source over a wide luminance range in response to a luminance input. The apparatus includes: a voltage source having an output configured to couple with the light source, a first input configured to receive the luminance input, and a second input; a photodetector unit configured to logarithmically compress the luminance range and determine a voltage based on a luminance of the light source in the compressed range; a comparator having an input coupled to the photodetector unit and having an output; and, a signal converter having an input coupled to the output of the comparator and having an output coupled to the second input of the voltage source. The voltage source is configured to generate an output signal at the output of the voltage source. The output signal has a frequency and a pulse width based on the luminance input. The comparator is configured to determine an error signal based on a comparison of the luminance input with the voltage. The converter is configured to exponentially convert the error signal to the frequency.

Light emitting diode driving apparatus with high power and wide dimming range

Methods and apparatus are provided for a backlit display with variable luminance and chrominance. The apparatus comprises i groups of LEDs of different colors and one or more sensors optically coupled to the LEDs. The combined light produced by the LEDs is directed to a transmissive liquid crystal display, preferably through a diffusing layer. The sensors monitor the output Sof each group of LEDs. Sfor each group of LEDs is multiplied by a chrominance determining parameter Kto obtain K*Swhich is then compared to a commanded luminance signal Lto obtain L&#x2212;K*S, which difference is used to adjust the drive current to each group of LEDs to achieve Lwith the desired chrominance set by K. By changing Kand Lthe chrominance and luminescence of the display may be varied and aging effects compensated.

Chroma compensated backlit display

An apparatus and method is disclosed for regulating the cold spot temperature of a light emitting enclosure. A cold spot regulation system defines and controls the temperature of the cold spot. The cold spot regulation system includes an interface housing secured to the light emitting enclosure and two ducts extending from the interface housing. The cold spot regulation system uses a coolant fluid to lower the operating temperature of the light emitting enclosure. The coolant fluid is diverted into one of the ducts. The coolant fluid is passed by the cold spot of the light emitting enclosure and released out the other duct.
