Security tag having a linear clamp

A reusable EAS tag that is detachable from an article by placing the EAS tag in proximity to a detaching device is provided. The tag includes an energy coupler, a micro-actuator, and a clamping mechanism. The detaching device transmits a signal to the EAS tag to signal detachment, which is received by the energy coupler. The energy coupler converts the energy from the transmitted signal to electrical energy and delivers the electrical energy to the actuator. The actuator converts the electrical energy to mechanical energy to actuate the clamping mechanism and release the tag's locking or clamping mechanism for removal of the tag from the article to which it is attached.

A method and apparatus for a hard security tag and detaching device are described. The hard security tag may include a sensor to emit a detectable signal when it is in a monitored surveillance zone. The hard security tag may be attached to an item, such as an article of clothing. The detaching device may detach the hard security tag from the item.

Techniques to release a security tag are described. One embodiment may comprise a tag housing, a tack body, and a linear clamp disposed within the tag housing to retain the tack body. The linear clamp may move in a substantially linear direction in response to force to release the tack body from the linear clamp. Other embodiments are described and claimed.

Release techniques for a security tag

An EAS tag in which the tag is held to an article by an attaching assembly a part of which is releasably prevented from being withdrawn from the body of the tag. The tag body is provided with an arcuate channel through which an arcuate detacher probe can be guided for releasing the attaching assembly part. A spring clamp provides the releasable preventing function and includes jaws specifically adapted to respond to in-plane torsional forces provided by the arcuate probe which is moved through the arcuate channel by rotation to reach the spring clamp. The tag has improved anti-defeat devices and methods including one or more of the following; a shield to protect the EAS sensor, a shield to protect the releasable spring clamp, a tag self-alarm that alarms upon various unauthorized defeat attempts, an LED to signal an armed condition of the tag alarm, a magnet switch to alarm the tag upon exposure to a relatively strong magnetic field, and a plurality of apertures to decoy the position of the alarm piezo.

Security apparatus for electronic article surveillance tag

A theft deterrent device has a body portion and an attachment portion. The attachment portion has an upper jaw and a lower jaw. The upper jaw is spaced from the lower jaw so as to define a mouth in which a portion of an article can be inserted. A pin is movably mounted in the upper jaw, at least between a retracted position in which the pin does not substantially extend into the mouth, and an extended position in which the pin extends through the mouth and into the lower jaw. Releasable locking structure is provided to secure the pin in the extended position. The device can be used in combination with electronic article surveillance technology to secure articles against theft, with reduced damage to the articles and with reduced risk to persons handling the tags. A detachment device for use with a theft deterrent device is also disclosed.

An EAS tag in which the tag is held to an article by an attaching assembly a part of which is releasably prevented from being withdrawn from the body of the tag. The tag body is provided with an arcuate channel through which an arcuate detacher probe can be guided for releasing the attaching assembly part. A spring clamp provides the releasable preventing function and includes jaws specifically adapted to respond to in-plane torsional forces provided by the arcuate probe which is moved through the arcuate channel by rotation to reach the spring clamp. An abutment and spring gate mechanism is placed within the arcuate channel to prevent a relatively rigid wire formed into an arcuate shape from being used to release the attaching assembly part.

An improved attachment mechanism for a reusable theft deterrent tag of the type that includes a tack assembly as part of the attachment mechanism. The provided attachment mechanism includes a tack assembly having an elongated tack body connected to a tack head. A retaining member is attachable to the tack head and forms a loop to provide a variety of additional attachment positions for attachment to various articles to be protected and/or identified. The tack head includes at least one recessed area under the tack head on the side adjacent the tack body to receive at least one end of the retaining member. When the tack body is inserted into a theft deterrent tag, the tack head rests relatively flush against the tag body, capturing the retaining member end in the recessed area. The end of the retaining member includes a shoulder that engages a mating blocking member in the recessed area to prevent the end of the retaining member from being pried out of the tack head when the tack assembly is properly connected to a tag. A wire lanyard can be utilized with, or in place of the retaining member for attachment to certain articles. The retaining member can be made of a rigid or semi-flexible hardened material that is difficult to cut and/or break.
