A fastener retention apparatus,for retaining a fastener base,has first and second complementary half-channels,and,each having a plurality of holes,therein for acceptance of a fastener,to secure the half-channels in a nested arrangement. Each half-channel further has a plurality of slots,therein for acceptance of a plurality of tabs,depending from the periphery of said fastener base,thereby providing for secure retention thereof.

Fastener retention apparatus

A captive nut comprises an internally threaded nut body having torque receiving wrench pads and an annular truncated conical surface terminating in a radially extending load transfer surface. The nut body is accepted in a complementary cup-shaped washer having a conical cylindrical wall portion complementary to the conical wall portion of the nut body so as to retain the nut body. An initially truncated conical retention element is disposed between the load transfer surface of the nut body and a radial portion of the cup-shaped washer. Torquing of the nut body toward a workpiece effects deformation of the retention element nut into a complementary annular recess in the bolt thereby permanently capturing the nut on the bolt.

A composite blind plastic rivet having a ductile plastic sheath fully covering the blind head on the rivet to preclude protrusion of fibers upon formation thereof.

Sheathed composite blind rivet

A composite blind rivet wherein a ductile metallic sheath fully covers the blind head forming portion of the rivet before and after deformation thereof so as to preclude protrustion of said fibers upon formation of said blind head. The sheath is initially expanded radially along a thin-walled portion thereof during blind head formation by the hydrostatic pressure generated by axial compression of the rivet's composite core, whereafter axial compression of the sheath supplants the hydrostatic core pressure to radially outwardly buckle the sheath into a blind head preferably of frusto-conical cross-section. Subsequent to blind head formation, the sheath elastically maintains a radially inward bias on the rivet's composite core while elastically axially biasing the anvil from the workpieces, whereby clamp-up force is maintained notwithstanding nominal plastic cold flow of the rivet's composite core during use.

A tool for forming a head on a plastic rivet while achieving and maintaining 'draw up' of the elements to be conjugally secured thereby. The tool may be heated to facilitate head forming and to effect complete polymerization of a plastic rivet, such as a rivet comprising a 'B' stage thermoset resin.

A composite rivet comprises a preformed head portion, a shear portion, an integral mandrel extending from said shear portion having an annular recess therein, a deformable plastic locking ring radially aligned with and filling the recess in said mandrel, and a collar telescoped about and radially aligned with said locking ring for controlling deformation thereof.

The disclosure relates to a torque responsive control system for a powered fastener driving tool having a reciprocable control rod for controlling the supply of power to the motor thereof. The torque responsive system features a plurality of ball pins that extend between front and rear ball pin retainers so as to be movable between a circumferentially extending drive position and an axially extending motor shut down position.
