The present invention relates to a novel process for the preparation of 1-(3-trialkylsilylphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoromethyl ethanones from 1-halo-3-trialkylsilanyl-benzenes. 1-(3-trialkylsilylphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoromethyl ethanones are useful for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia. In addition, the present invention relates to a novel process for purifying 1-(3-trialkylsilylphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoromethyl ethanones utilizing a novel extraction method.

The present invention relates to a novel process for preparing 1-halo-3-trialkylsilanyl-benzenes from 1,3-dihalo-benzenes which are useful intermediates in the preparation of 1-(3-trialkylsilylphenyl)-2,2,2-trifluoromethyl ethanones which are useful for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease and senile dementia.

A method for preparing an .alpha.-substituted styrene such as 2-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-4,4,4-trichloro-1-butene comprising contacting, an .alpha.-haloalkylbenzene such as 3-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)-1,1,1,3-tetrachlorobutane with a catalyst consisting essentially of .gamma.-alumina dried to a moisture content between about zero to about 12% by weight, the .gamma.-alumina serving to catalyze the dehydrohalogenation of the .alpha.-haloalkylbenzene to produce the .alpha.-substituted styrene.
