A tiled display device is formed from display tiles having picture element (pixel) positions defined up to the edge of the tiles. Each tile includes a memory which stores display data, and pixel driving circuitry which controls the scanning and illumination of the pixels on the tile. The tiles are formed in two parts, an electronics section and a display section. Each of these parts includes connecting pads which cover several pixel positions. Each connecting pad makes an electrical connection to only one row electrode or column electrode. The connecting pads on the display section are electrically connected and physically joined to corresponding connecting pads on the electronics section to form a complete tile.

Tiled electronic display structure

A tiled display device is formed from display tiles having picture element (pixel) positions defined up to the edge of the tiles. Each pixel position has an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) active area which occupies approximately 25 percent of the pixel area. Each tile includes a memory which stores display data, and pixel driving circuitry which controls the scanning and illumination of the pixels on the tile. The pixel driving circuitry is located on the back side of the tile and connections to pixel electrodes on the front side of the tile are made by vias which pass through portions of selected ones of the pixel areas which are not occupied by the active pixel material. The tiles are to formed in two parts, an electronics section and a display section. Each of these parts includes connecting pads which cover several pixel positions. Each connecting pad makes an electrical connection to only one row electrode or column electrode. The connecting pads on the display section are electrically connected and physically joined to corresponding connecting pads on the electronics section to form a complete tile. Each tile has a glass substrate on the front of the tile. Black matrix lines are formed on the front of the glass substrate and the tiles are joined by mullions which have the same appearance as the black-matrix lines. Alternatively, the black matrix lines may be formed on the inside surface of an optical integrating plate and the tiles may be affixed to the integrating plate such that the edges of the joined tiles are covered by the black-matrix lines. A cathodoluminescent tile structure is formed from individual tiles that have multiple phosphor areas, a single emissive cathode and horizontal and vertical electrostatic deflecting grids which deflect the electron beam produced by the single cathode onto multiple ones of the phosphor areas.

In a cathode ray tube, plural electron beams are directed towards a faceplate biased at screen potential and are magnetically scanned by a non-self-converging deflection yoke across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image. The plural electron beams are substantially converged near two opposing edges of the faceplate. A processor changes the raster of the image from a first raster corresponding to position of the image to a second raster corresponding to the position of the plural electron beams on the faceplate. One or more electrodes between the tube neck and the faceplate are biased above and/or below screen potential to deflect electrons landing near the periphery of the faceplate.

Space-saving cathode ray tube employing a non-self-converging deflection yoke

A plural-beam cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons towards a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. The electron beam is magnetically deflected to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon a pattern of phosphors thereon to produce light of different colors depicting an image. A first conductive coating near the tube neck is biased below screen potential and a second conductive coating between the neck electrode and the faceplate is biased at screen potential. A gap between the first and second conductive coatings varies in distance from the faceplate so as to be non-Z-planar. The non-Z-planar gap is preferably partly within the region wherein electrons are deflected by the magnetic deflection yoke and partly more proximate the faceplate than such deflection region.

Bi-potential electrode space-saving cathode ray tube

A cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons away from a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. One or more electromagnets located on or near the rear wall of the tube envelope are biased with dc currents so that the electron beam (three beams in a color tube) is deflected by the magnetic field produced thereby to impinge upon the faceplate. The electron beam is magnetically deflected over a relatively small angle as it exits the electron gun to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. The electromagnet closest the electron gun is typically biased to produce a strong magnetic field to deflect electrons to the faceplate near to the electron gun. The electromagnets more distant the electron gun produce magnetic fields to direct electrons towards the faceplate, with the electromagnet most distant the electron gun deflecting the electrons to tend to increase the landing angle thereof on the faceplate. One or more of the foregoing electromagnets may be utilized in cooperation with one or more electrodes biased at a potential to similarly deflect the electrons to the faceplate.

Asymmetric space-saving cathode ray tube with magnetically deflected electron beam

Large visual displays are comprised of an array of smaller display devices or modules, each of which displays a portion of the image to be displayed so that together the array of smaller display devices displays the complete image. Unlike conventional large displays which necessarily seek to minimize the edge areas of the smaller display elements that do not display an image so as to minimize the &ldquo;seams&rdquo; or gaps between the image portions, the present display device projects image portions scanned from less than the entire display area of the smaller display devices in an array to create an image on a substantially flat panel that is substantially free of visual &ldquo;seams&rdquo; or gaps between the image portions. Thus the display device may employ display elements that do not have narrow edges and that are not contiguous to generate overlapping sub-images. Image pixels in what would otherwise be &ldquo;seams&rdquo; or gaps are generated from the image data and are displayed in proper position and brightness in the displayed image, such as in the overlap regions of overlapping sub-images. Where the scanning beams are electron beams, the flat panel is a faceplate that includes phosphors that are excited by the electron beam to produce light, and where the beams are light beams, the flat panel is a distributor of light, such as a diffuser panel.

Modular display system

A cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons towards a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. The electron beam is magnetically deflected to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. A neck electrode near the tube neck is biased at or below screen potential and a second electrode between the neck electrode and the faceplate is biased at or above screen potential. As a result, the electrons are deflected over a greater total angle than is obtained from the magnetic deflection. A third electrode proximate the faceplate is biased at or below screen potential to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle of the electrons thereon. A metal and ceramic support includes a resistive voltage divider to which ones of the electrodes connect.

Space-saving cathode ray tube

A cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons towards a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. The electron beam (three beams in a color tube) is magnetically deflected to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. A first pair of electromagnetic coils forward of the tube neck and deflection yoke is biased by a substantially constant current level to further deflect the electron beam. As a result, the electrons are deflected over a greater total angle than is obtained from the magnetic deflection yoke alone. A further pair of electromagnetic coils proximate the faceplate is biased by an oppositely poled substantially constant current level to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle of the electrons thereon.

A cathode ray tube and a plural beam electron gun therefor include a main lens that comprises a tubular focus grid G and a conductive coating on the inner surface of the tube neck. The neck coating extends from the region of focus grid G towards the faceplate of the cathode ray tube. Preferably, the exit of the focus grid G is non-planar and is curved or undulated and focus grid G includes an aperture plate intermediate its entrance and exit. The aperture plate preferably has an elliptical center beam opening and connected-semi-elliptical outer-beam openings, to better converge and focus the outer and center electron beams. Also preferably, the focus grid G is centrally located in the tube neck and at least partly surrounded by the conductive neck coating.

A cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons towards a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. The electron beam is magnetically deflected to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. A neck electrode near the tube neck is biased at or below screen potential and a second electrode between the neck electrode and the faceplate is biased at or above screen potential. As a result, the electrons are deflected over a greater total angle than is obtained from the magnetic deflection. A third electrode proximate the faceplate is biased at or below screen potential to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle of the electrons thereon.

A cathode ray tube includes an electron gun directing electrons away from a faceplate having an electrode biased at screen potential. A plurality of electrodes located on or near the rear wall of the tube envelope are biased at graduated potentials so that the electron beam is deflected by the electrostatic field produced thereby to impinge upon the faceplate. The electron beam is magnetically deflected over a relatively small angle as it exits the electron gun to scan across the faceplate to impinge upon phosphors thereon to produce light depicting an image or information. The electrodes may be biased at or below screen potential, with the electrode closest the electron gun typically biased at a negative or ground potential and the electrode closest the faceplate (i.e. distal the electron gun) typically biased below screen potential to direct electrons towards the faceplate, thereby to increase the landing angle thereof.

Asymmetric, gradient-potential, space-savings cathode ray tube

A projection tube has a phosphor-coated faceplate at one end of a vacuum envelope and a plural-beam providing electron lens structure at the opposite end thereof. The electron lens structure includes four electrodes having axially-aligned apertures defining parallel channels for the plural electron beams to pass through to be focused and converged onto a small spot on the faceplate. The first and second electrodes of the electron lens structure shape the electron beams and the third and fourth electrodes thereof converge and focus the electron beams toward the same location on the faceplate. The potential applied to the fourth electrode is at or close to the potential at the phosphor, and is substantially higher than the potential applied to the third electrode. The lens structures of the third and fourth electrodes may each include an inner electron lens structure and an outer electron lens structure. The lens structure of the invention provides a projection tube having greater brightness and/or smaller spot size than is conventionally available.

Display panels using fibrous field emitters

A deflection apparatus produces a field gradient that reduces a tendency of a major axis of a beam spot to become elongated at each corner, at each end of a horizontal axis and at each end of a vertical axis of a display screen relative to the beam spot at the center of the display screen. A beam spot stigmator causes the beam spot to be substantially anastigmatic at each of the corners, the end of the horizontal axis and the end of the vertical axis of the display screen.
