Impact- and solvent-resistant resin blends are prepared from a polyphenylene ether or blend thereof with a polystyrene, a linear polyester such as a poly(alkylene dicarboxylate), at least one polymer containing a substantial proportion of aromatic polycarbonate units as a compatibilizing agent, and, preferably, at least one elastomeric polyphenylene ether-compatible impact modifier. There may also be present a minor amount of at least one epoxide and/or masked isocyanate such as triglycidyl isocyanurate or a glycidyl methacrylate polymer. The polyphenylene ether preferably has a low proportion of unneutralized amino nitrogen, if any.

Compositions containing polyphenylene ether-poly(alkylene dicarboxylate) copolymers are prepared by a reaction between the two polymers and, optionally, at least one functionalizing agent therefor. The functionalizing agent may first be reacted with the polyphenylene ether and the resulting functionalized polyphenylene ether in turn reacted with a functionalized or unfunctionalized poly(alkylene dicarboxylate). Alternatively, an unfunctionalized or hydroxyalkyl-functionalized polyphenylene ether may be incorporated in a conventional polyester-forming reaction. The copolymer-containing compositions are characterized by a number of desirable properties including high impact strength and solvent resistance.

Functionalized polyphenylene ethers are prepared by reacting a polyphenylene ether with a polymerizable olefinic compound containing a phosphorus or silicon atom or an epoxy or lactam group, preferably in the presence of a free radical initiator. They may be used in the preparation of compatible polyphenylene ether blends with such polymers as polyesters and polyamides.

The polyphenylene ether is preferably inactivated by reaction with at least one non-volatile carboxylic acid or anhydride and/or by extrusion with vacuum venting.

Polyphenylene ether resin compositions, optionally also containing polystyrenes, with improved impact properties and resistance to stress-cracking and delamination are prepared by blending with said resin at least one hydrocarbon polymer containing phosphorus acid or derivative (preferably phosphonate) groups and at least one fatty acid salt such as zinc stearate. Preferably, there are added to the blend at least one plasticizer (especially a triaryl phosphate) and at least one aromatic polymer containing acidic (especially sulfonic acid) substituents or salts thereof.
